Yep, I have no qualms about running 1.6bar and around 380bhp on my open deck engine. It has forged pistons and rods, race bearings and stronger head gaskets and studs. As a standard engine before the rebuild it was mapped to 1.5bar on the standard turbo with 350bhp - the mapper's considered opinion was that avoiding det was THE issue rather than absolute level of boost (Paul at Zen, one of the most knowledgeable of Impreza mappers).
The cause of the rebuild was unrelated to boost.
I think closed deck is only relevant if you're going to blow it really hard with a GT30 or SC46 or similar.
