Despite my earlier ramblings about the Scoob never seeing the light of day again...

After being given a Helix clutch for free from a mate, Today was the day to find out whether it was the clutch at fault or if i'd managed to destroy yet another gearbox.
Tim Farmer (ex Zen Performance) arrived and proceeded to remove the box and have a look see at what damage i'd managed to do to it this time .
If the box required a strip and rebuild then the car would be back in the garage for the foreseeable future :(

Next up was good and bad news...

Bad news first,
Sadly the clutch i'd been (gratefully) given was out of a STi 6 speed box but was a five speed item and wouldn't fit my 6spd flywheel. On the plus side Tim has a 5 speed flywheel which he's giving me FOC & will bring over and fit in a couple of weeks + it gives me a chance to sort a few issues that need addressing.

Good news,
Apart from the worn synchros, it appears that the box is good and it was the clutch that shat itself (which is a hooge relief). Despite the disappointment of it not being back on the road today it cheered me up no end to see the state of the clutch when removed.
The friction plate, apart from being down to the rivets has almost broken into 2 pieces and the pressure plate is a everso slightly worn

PS

If anyone wants a proper (no bullshit and throughly knowledegable Subaru tech) then I can recommend Tim without question.

Bring on November 10th when the Scoob will live again, wooo-fucking-hooo :D

hahah :D
You got your monies worth out of that clutch Jon! I keep hearing great things about Tim, and your endorsement adds to the no nonsense comments of others. I may be talking out of my hat, but wasn't the 5 speed stronger than the 6 speed anyway? ( I may be confused between EVO's, M3's or something else :) )
Well done though Jon. Onwards and upwards

Tim deserves his rep and is an all round thoroughly decent chap to talk to.
Not sure if the 5 speed clutch is better, but the 6 speed is bigger, and bigger is better right? :) Tbh I don't really care, I just need 1.5 bar of boooost in my life again
I almost feel like a kid at Christmas and am kiddy with excitement at the mere thought of hooning the thing around again.
Can't fooking wait :auto:

Had my 1st proper hoon in the Scoob since getting it back on the black stuff and...

Foooooking hell!, despite it's relative lowly power compared to some on here; it properly got my attention on full chat and demanded a modicum of respect (something that i've sorely missed). My Aprilia RSV is quick, but in a different way.
After a few years of track/road abuse it feels very very tired/loose & i'm going to need to replace engine & box mounts with some hardrace items + swap out the rack, polybush everything and various other stuff to get her back to her best.
If i'm honest i've no idea why I fell out of love with the thing in the first place, but it sure as hell feels good to be back behind the wheel, thats for sure :driving:
I'll just blame it on the phrase "absence makes the heart grow fonder" :sifone:

I wish to Christ I had put my last Impreza in a garage and forgotten about her for a few months, instead of selling it cheap and pining after another one. I'm not surprised that you fell back in love with the car though Jon; it's a bit decent mate.

Jon i know exactly where you are comming from and agree totally. Every time i get back in mine after several months break i always forget how sodding quick everything happens from feeling the boost put me in the back of my seat to the steering and gear changes. It always leave me sweating (and mine is slightly less powered than yours;)) But always without exception i get out with the biggest, stupidest grin. Its why i could never sell my old thing its good for my soul:). I think you done the right thing having a break from yours, And if you can take breaks from it and not drive it every day you stand less chance of falling under that dark cloud of "I`m bored of this, I need more power!"- Well that my theory!:D
