Stuart wrote:Not sure whether the video made it look worse than it was behind the wheel, but the understeer looks like a bit of a restriction on cornering speed (entry and exit speed seems way down on your normal) Have you got any data/lap times yet? I appreciate that these laps were only a bit of a run out by the way

Since running the car at santa pod we have had concerns with tha stance of the car, it seemed to be squatting at the rear. This was only noticed when looking at the photos.
Following on from Ford Fair where as Stu. pointed out we suffered a lot of understeer:banghead: So much so that last sunday me and Alan set an hour aside to discuss it, turned into 1 1/2 hours:boxing_smiley:

We sat down and went through the video footage stopping it after every corner to discuss why he was on the grass or as Al calls it astroturf:driving:

I wasn't picking fault with his driving just trying to understand the whats and whys.

So, what did we conclude from this......

Al can't drive for shit:smilielol5: ONLY JOKING MATE.....:smilielol5:

Seriously though we came to these conclusions.

1. The day before silverstone we swapped the o/s/f tyre for the o/s/r. This gave Alan different levels of grip when turning left or right.

2. The engine weighs a fair bit less than herbie's engine, but we are running herbies suspension on the front.

3. When widening the rear track we inadvertantly lowered the rear end of the car due to the increase in camber.

4. The front bumper sits an inch higher thans herbie's did, so the undertray at the front is higher than it was on herbie and is slightly angled high at the bumper, lower at the cross member, causing lift.

As we need to get the car over to Gordons next week but haven't had chance to sort out a new rad we decided to flush the whole system today.....Yep i would say that the rad is fecked as all the sludge was mainly confined to the header tank, rad and pipes infront of the thermostate, which was also caked in it.

This is what came out of the header tank......

Just for an added bit of security Alan decided to drill a hole in the outer edge of the stat...........and yep he broke another drill:mad:
Image

So he stormed off into the house effing and blinding and came back out litterally 10secs later with a file......what the feck was he going to do with that i thought..

Image

Sharpen the broken drill bit.....................How the hell does his mind work like that, I would have to stand there and think of a solution, it still makes me laugh at the way and speed that his mind comes up with these crazy ass solutions that work:willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

He's luckier than me, I would have drilled through my foot doing that!! That definitely needed a flush, must have been really struggling to cope with all that cack in it.

After flushing the entire water system and cleaning all the crap out of the header tank and pipes we had to to take the car over to Gordon's yesterday. The car ran about 12 degrees cooler all the way there and back:hurray: We'll run for a bit and flush the system about another 2-3 times to ensure the whole system is clear, then ditch the standard rad and fit an alloy rad.

That's good work!
And a relatively cheap 12 degree improvement is not to be sniffed at.
400 here we come eh?

As mentioned in another thread we are moving this project to the final stages. Short list of planned changes.

1. Omex management
2. New cams
3. Different exhaust manifold
4. Alloy rad.

1. Omex - Got
2. New cams -Doing a mild inlet upgrade until we get the head work done.
3. Exhaust manifold - Got (Bart any chance that I can see it before it's fitted)
4. Alloy rad - Still to get
5. Wasted spark coil pack and leads - Got
6. PAS oil cooler - Got

As per usual Alan has planned out the time frame for the work to be done. He has given himself a whole day to strip everything down and have it all rebuilt so that the following day Gordon can map it:D

was over at streetracers doing a load of work on the car changing stuff, making new parts and having some fun doing it.

started off taking off turbo, manifold, wastegate and down pipe.
also stripped out engine wiring loom, coil leads, coil and ecu.
Image

had to make a new bracket for the coil pack and map sensor to sit on,
took no time at all as i had made the same one week before for a mk2 escort
Image

then attached the coil pack and map sensor
Image

and fitted into the car along with leads
Image
Image

after this i fitted the new 2wd manifold into the car to check clearences
with the turbo to the head but after test fitting we needed a spacer
plate between the manifold and elbow so made a call to a guy in
mansfield as he had one and would bring it down the following day.

in the mean time i fitted the boost gauge in replace of the old oil preasure
gauge that didnt work and fitted a new one into the car.
Image

and also fitted the new lights to the rear of the car and like the way they look.
Image

we are fitting a new cam on the inlet side so started removing cover and old cam.
Image

old cam next to new cam that is going into the car, the new cam is 2half mm bigger.
Image

upon fitting the cam into the car we needed a 2mm spacer for the car
as it was a 2wd cam going into a 4wd head so had to go over to a mates
for him to mill a new spacer for us and also picked up the bottom
pully he machined for us.
Image

fitted cam back into the head and was tightening it down and one of the
bolts pulled the threads out the head so after drilling a new hole and
fitted a hellycoil and refitted the cam and tightened down.
also painted the verniers as were looking a bit tatty.
Image

as we use a external waste gate i had to cut a hole into the elbow off the mainfold which took a bit of time to cut into a cast manifold but was well
worth taking the time over as i thinks it came out really well.
Image

gordon welded the plate on and 2 studs the hold the wastegate into
place as we couldnt get a nut and bolt on.
Image

after getting the spacer for manifold attached manifold onto car and
put the turbo back on only to find then that the water pipe running to the
heater matrix was pressing onto the turbo housing so hat to make up
one of those and refit turbo. also made up a new oil return pipe as well.
Image

the above picture is how the car was left last night, with all the problems of
making new parts and waiting for parts to turn up had to leave car there and drive back in gordons car.
all the ecu and loom has been fitted into the car and only thing left to do
is fit and modify the down pipe and do the mapping.
hopefully pick it up on wednesday or thursday.
