Post by duncan »

just found my old box of rallying pics from the 1980's (always find this kind of stuff when you are looking for something else!! )

will get some scanned on a bit later today but range from navigating in:

my old mini

Post by duncan »

spec:

998 1968 Mini Cooper
overbored to 1046
flat top pistons
glas flowed head (done by my own fair hand)
twin 1 1/4 inch SU
custom flowed manifold (done by me again)
lightened and balanced crankshaft
285 piper cam
lightened and balanced flywheel and backplate
centre oil pickup
full roll cage
classic bucket seats
minisport 3 into 1 exhaust manifold
minisport stright through centre exhaust with cherry bomb centre silencer
minisport bump stops
bald tyres :D
fully removeable front end due to the engine being taken in and out so often we thought it was easier to cut the grill off from the body and weld to the bonnet :)

performance figs

... no idea but it would rev to 8500 rpm and 6000 in 4th 19.6 mph per 1000 revs so close to 120mph
... rolling road - never heard of one of them in those days

Escort Mk1 RS2000

Post by duncan »

The escort Mk1 that I used to co-drive in.

The driver was very very quick and this pic was taken at Millbrook proving ground I believe on the way to a top 5 overall.

Dont know much about the spec apart from it was 5 gear conversion and used hand cut formula 3 avon slicks and I spent most of the time sideways :D

Again at the cambridge stages:

you think I look 10 in them .... have a look at these :)

story:

Road Rally down near Staplehurt in Kent. This was at the start of a section through the night at about 3am. I was busy plotting the route ahead so told my driver (and best mate) to drive slowly to allow us to make progress but still give me a chance to plot.

There was a long straight at at the end a hump back bridge. He shouts to say "Photo" - there was a board saying Photo at the side of the road meaning that a photographer was there. This generally meant a jump or something spectacular. By the time he had accelerated flat out down the straight and we hit the humpback bridge, I had traced the route back from what I was plotting, to the tight right that quickly followed the bridge !!. Just as we hit the bridge and took off, there was a flash and we passed the photographer at head height and cleared the hedge into the field ! :o

Image

Once landed, and buried as you can see we were grateful of the push from the photographer and his mate to get out :D

Image

I gained about 4 inches in height that night from the mud on my shoes.

We continued for a few miles slowly as there was a massive vibration... we stopped and I scraped about 2 kilos of mud from the inside of the wheels !! - we carried on and finished 12th I think :D

Very priviledged to be asked to con-drive for this series - think it was 1990 (the year after Richard Burns and Robert Reid won it) and were given tuition by them on pace note making as well as how to organise a rally team from the co-drivers seat.

Richard Burns' dad used to service crew for us that year and it was an honour getting to know him and sharing memories of Richard when he was young.

This series of pictures was taken on the Dukeries Rally in Nottinghamshire where we came 2nd in class.

Overall in the championship we came second and were presented our award by Roger Clark at a prizegiving at the Peugeot factory in Coventry. Highlight of that evening was Rachel trying to look up Robert Reid's kilt to see if the rumour of scottish men was true.... I couldnt take her anywhere then either :D

Dunk - these are fantastic - loving the 4 wheels off the ground prior to 4 feet into the ground :)
