The reality of ot is, some failed, some didn't. Personally I wouldn't want to push a stock 2.5 the way I would the 2ltr. The 2.5s can be built very strong indeed and has been proven to be a serious engine. The torque generated by the 25% increase in displacement along with the added pumping for increased spool is very very good on the road.
The 2.5 is a brutal road engine, my own one is still making over 420lbft @ 7k and is limited to 520lbfst to keep cylinder pressures sensible.
In most cases though, when buying an unknown car I'd say my money was more safely spent on a 2ltr.
