You'll hear all sorts of horror stories regarding 2.5ltr head gaskets and pistons mate.
The reality of ot is, some failed, some didn't. Personally I wouldn't want to push a stock 2.5 the way I would the 2ltr. The 2.5s can be built very strong indeed and has been proven to be a serious engine. The torque generated by the 25% increase in displacement along with the added pumping for increased spool is very very good on the road.
The 2.5 is a brutal road engine, my own one is still making over 420lbft @ 7k and is limited to 520lbfst to keep cylinder pressures sensible.

In most cases though, when buying an unknown car I'd say my money was more safely spent on a 2ltr.

Seems to have a good amount of decent bits on it and isn't overly stressed at that power level. 5 speed box will be the weak link on that eventually.
Not bad car for the money. Worth funding out who mapped it too.

I had the same debate a couple of year back. I opted for Blob as the look was more to my liking. I wish I had gone for an STI as upgrading to the 6-speed setup, after the inevitable 5-speed failure, was a major pain. However the upgrading was the fun part, second only to the driving. For 300-400bhp the STI ticks the boxes, over this you are upgrading most of the STI extras anyway.

There are many good examples around but it will be a hunt for one at the right money.

It really is great to get some jap 4wd madness back into daily life :auto:

Hurst cars ... well they're localish ... a good choice of car, but be prepared to sit around waiting for max to turn up - he's not the most punctual person .. he's always 5 mins away - the cars are at his lock up. His stock changes all the time and you'll find that more of what is advertised is probably sold by the time you ask him about them! - My type R was not the car I was trying to buy, he sold that 5 minutes before I got there!! .. that said - he will have a good choice all in one place.

Also, a number of his cars I saw on forums weeks earlier a couple of hundred cheaper - he seems to buy all the forum cars

Any thoughts on wr1's? Seem good, not sure what the widetrack really means on the later sti's. I'm between an evo 8/9 or sti/wr1 just a weekend/family car

WR1s are a nice car. Made in 2004 after Petter Solbergs WRC championship win. The. WR1 was a limited edition UK car that came in a bespoke ice blue colour, wr1 embroidered interior, Prodrive PFF7 Speedline wheels, fog lamps, stainless mesh grilles and some other trinkets I've probably forgotten. It retained the 2ltr UK STI 8 engine with some slight revisions inc sports cat, fuel pump and ECU tweek. This took power to 325ps.
Good car that will always hold a slight premium due to its limited numbers.

Widetrack cars were as the name suggest, slightly wider track. They had larger bearing packs and hubs which ultimately meant a PCD increase on the wheels stud pattern. It went from 5x100 to 5x114.5.
This is the same PCD as the EVO as it happens. The widetrack cars were introduced from 2005 onwards and instantly noticeable by the small additional flares on yen rear arches which follow into the rear bumper. All Widetrack STIs onwards came with DCCD. (Driver controlled centre diff). Basically Subarus answer to the AYC on an EVO.

Hope that helps.

I have a WR1 Ian. Its my daily drive. If your local to Norwich or Dereham you can come have a look. Cost me 11k a year ago and had to go to Birmingham to get it, had 32k on the clock and full subaru history. Ive taken it on track a couple of times and had some fun. Has a 6 speed box but you zip through the gears, turbo comes in at 3.2k revs. I get around 24 mpg and its £284 a year to tax. If you need anymore info let me know. I think there are 2 maybe 3 in Norfolk.

Cheers Nick, I really would like to look around one. I've been looking on wr1oc and it seems a low mileage one costs about 11k if you hear of any local ones for sale that would be great. I've got a few cars on the short list now, the wr1 being one of them.
