Team TnTRacing

Season Review – 2015

Paul Taylor - Team Manager
Alan Tolley - Driver / Mechanic / Fabrications
Wayne Tolley - Mechanic

Car - Ford Sierra XR4x4
Engine - 2.0 16v Cosworth

Prior to the start of this season we had had quite a few issues with the car and had also noticed whilst out at Ford Fair that the car was extremely laggy and not making full boost until some 5.5k+ revs. When we finally took the car for a full diagnostic, the results were far worse than we expected.
The boost solenoid was not working
Wastegate was plumbed up incorrectly
Cam timing was out
Boost controller was not set up correctly
Ecu was nothing more than an expensive paper weight.
The only thing that was controlling the boost level was the wastegate spring....

Eventually we got all the isues and faults sorted with the help of RGS MotorSport and AP Tuning, the car was finally ready for Time Attack. We still needed to get the new design applied to the car, sort out alloys and tyres plus a few other little jobs.

Then on 8th March I received a text message from Alan (my best friend for some 14yrs), saying that he was in hospital having suffered a minor heart attack. This meant everything was put on hold including Time Attack as Alan's health and well being was the main priority. We pulled out of round 1 but as there were 11 weeks until round 2 we decided to wait and take advice from the doctors before making a final decision on the rest of the season.

Having missed the 1st round due to Alan being taken ill, our season finally kicked off at round 2 Snetterton.

Snetterton – 1:34:953

Warm up session the rain was falling hard and we even had a river running across the back of the pit garage. The rain was heavy and the first 2 laps were going to be behind the safety car. Just 3 laps into the session and Alan returned to the pits.

“I can't do this”, he explained. “Drivig in all that rain and spray is taking to much concentration and I can feel it”.
This was always going to be Alan's call and whatever that decision was I would fully support him.

Practice session and the rain had stopped although the track was still wet and greasy. Alan was a little nervous as he got ready to go out. I held him in the pit garage until the cars staarted rolling out onto track to help give him some clear space to settle in. It looked like he was going slowly as he came round Coram and I started to get worried but as he came on the straight he launched it and as he came past me the car sounded good and more importantly looked quick.
When Alan finally came in he had a smile on his face. He was still only driving at about 80% but as he said, 'he was just happy to be back'.

Qualifying and the track was drying up although still wet in places so the talk turned to tyres do we stay with the uniroyals or switch to the semi slicks. Eventually we settled on the Uniroyals.........bad choice. The long swepping right hander of Corum eventually over heated the front nearside tyre. Alan was not happy to say the least when he pitted before the session ended and to make matters worse he was second.

Final and it had rained again between qualifying and the final. Alan had asked for the front left to be swapped with the right rear but I told Wayne to wait has I headed to the pit wall. The F1 cars were out on track so I wanted to see how much water they were lifting. Even though the track looked wet there was no rooster tails behind the F1 cars so the track was only damp. I called Alan over to the pit wall to show him and said put the semi slicks on but give them 2 laps to come up to temp before you start pushing. Alan had decided to stay out for the whole of this session as we had to win and we knew the track would only get drier as the session wet on.
1st in class.

The conditions were very tricky all day long with multiple red flags in every session but somehow they managed to keep things flowing and Alan managed to keep the car on the black stuff and pointing in the right direction. The season was going to be a tough one but we felt we were ready for the challenge.

Brands Hatch – 57:231

We arrived at the circuit shortly after 07.00 unloaded the car and started setting up in the pit garage whilst Alan went off to sign on. We had already discussed our plans for the day on the 3hr drive to the circuit. 1st job was to change over the wheels from the Bridgestone road tyres to the semi-slicks then make sure it was ready for scrutineering.

Warm up and Alan was out early pounding the tarmac, he only did abouit half dozen laps before returning to the pit garage As I made my way back to the garage Alan and Wayne were deep in discussion and when I asked what was wrong, he said he was just saying the clutch.
The clutch plate needed to be re-paddled and was planned to be taken out after Brands Hatch plus the clutch cable had stretched and we had a new one with us just in case it snapped. We had set a target lap time of 57secs so were very pleased to see a 58.8ish in the warm up session and in only 6 laps.

Practise session and again Alan was out early and seemed to be pushing a little harded this time out. Again Alan pitted before the end of the session although this time it was for a diffent reason other than saving the clutch. He was complaing of underster and said that it felt like the front left tyre had over heated. Wayne went staright to check the tyre presure and soon called us over. The tyre had indeed over heated and also had a chunk of rubber missing. Inspite of this Alan had still managed to put in a time of 57.2secs even though he had achieved our target lap time he was still unhappy with a couple of corners where he felt he could go quicker, so more time to come off.

With qualifying and the final still to go we had no option but to put the Bridgestone road tyres back on. Not ideal but at least we were still in it. So for the next 2 sesions Alan just went out and had fun and by the time the last chequered flag fell Alan had done enough to secure our second win of the season.

Thats 2 events done and we had suffered tyre issues at both events. Time to replace the damaged tyres and come up with a better plan of how and when we would use them. Our tyres were very specific in their application with them being focused on dry or wet conditions, which left us exposed in damp conditions.

Oulton Park – 01:46:708

This was an event that we were really looking forward to as this was a circuit that Alan was looking forward to driving.

Warm up Alan went out at the front of the pack as he wanted a clear track ahead of him. NOT GOOD, he was back in at the end of the warm up lap.
The gearbox had broke and he had lost 3rd gear......
This caused a difference of opinion, as I wanted to retire the car to save furthur damage but Alan wanted to continue on as there were much needed points to be scored. If we retired the car now that would have effectively put an end to any chance of winning the Championship. Alan would have to change from 2nd to 4th on the upshift and 4th to 2nd on the down shift. Meaning no engine braking when slowing for corners. This would put more strain on the brake pads and would certainly mean new pads as well after the event.

The next 2 sessions consisted of Alan only doing a few laps mainly to get use to driving without 3rd gear but at the same time not getting in the way of other competitors.

Final. A simple plan was agreed upon. Alan would wait in the pit garage until the rest of the pack were out on track, he would then head out and do 4 laps to ensure he posted a time. Then he would retire the car. All was going to plan 2 laps down 2 to go. Then on his 3rd lap I noticed that he taken 6 secs off his lap time. This could only mean that he had used 3rd . Not surprisingly he didn't make it round for another lap as the gearbox totally let go leaving him with no gears and he was forced to park up out on track and wait to be towed back in at the end of the session. On the upside he had managed to do enough to secure 2nd place which meant we were still in the hunt for the title.

Luckily there was a 5 week break before the next round at Croft as we had to get the spare gearbox stripped, inspected, uprated and rebuilt before the next round. This turned out to be harder than we thought as we first had to find 2 additional companies to carry out certain jobs.
After a lot of running around several hundred miles over several days the gearbox was finally rebuilt and it was now just down to the guys to swap the gearboxes out.

Croft – 01:42:068 (Lap record)

It had become clear to us that Alan was still struggling with his fitness and our normal way of doing things wasn't helping him, a change was needed and in some cases a return to basics. Alan headed off to Croft on the Friday evening with the race car and me and Wayne would join him on the Saturday morning. This meant that Alan would get more sleep before the event and wouldn't be faced with the early morning start and 4hr plus drive to the circuit. Hopefully this would leave him feeling not so tired and worn out through the day. Along with this major change there were also a couple more changes which we made to how we ran through the day, all of which made a noticeable difference.

Warm up session, Alan went out on the bridgstones as the track was damp so he used the session just to bed the new gearbox in and to learn the lines of the track. Session passed without issue although have to admit that the pressure was starting to build as we had to win today.

Practice session, went out again on the bridgestones as the track was still a bit damp. Started to build up his speed in the session but after 5 laps noticed there was an oil trail all round the track, knowing the rest of the day was going to be dry he ended the session early as he didn't want to push the car and get caught out by slipping off the track because of the oil. He got back into the pits and I asked why he had come in so early to which he informed me of the oil.

Qualifying session, knowing that we had to win qualifying Alan got himself into the car early and sat in there listening to his music trying to relax. For this event we had pit to car radio so I could feed Alan information if he was up or down in response to our competitors time which proved really useful. After the 20min session I called Alan over the radio to say we came first and was 2.4seconds quicker than our main competitor. Once Alan heard that he was over the moon and relieved we had won.

Final session, Alan did the same as for qualifying and got into the car early. He rolled out on track and did 2 laps but coming out the final hairpin corner the car started to splutter upon acceleration, he looked at the fuel gauge and noticed it was low so had to come into the pit garage for a top up of fuel. Slight oversight on my part.
Once wayne had put some fuel in Alan headed back out and there was less than half the session left, I called him over the radio and said just push hard you're 1 sec down.
So after the warm up lap to bring the tyres back up to temp Alan just went hell for leather for the next 4 laps, unfortunatly Alan's ear piece had fallen out and he could not hear me radioing him with laptime updates. So after the chequered flag had come out he didn't know if we had won or not so as soon as he pulled into pit lane I informed him were we had come. 1st and 1.9seconds quicker than our competitor.
He let out his emotions and started thumping the steering wheel with joy.

Rockingham – 01:45:636 (Lap record)

The preparation for this round had included service items, repairs and upgrades. In the final of the last round at croft we had split a power steering pipe, so had to get a replacement and fit it. The next job had been to fit new spark plugs as the ones in the car had been fitted for a while so needed changing. The other job was something which we had talked about for a while now, we fitted new poly windows. The guys also gave the car a full nut and bolt check.

Warm Up Alan had decided to go out towards the back of the pack as he wanted to use the session to check the car over and settle into the day. However this didn't quite go to plan after just a couple of laps he returned to the pits complaining of a bad vibration across the front of the car. After taking the front wheels off the problem was soon found, one of the wheels had lost it's wheel weights. Not a real issue as these were the Bridgestone tyres as we had planned to keep the semi slicks for use in qualifying and the final. Yet another wheel/tyre issue.

Practise We got Alan out towards the front of the pack. After the short warm up this was effectively Alan's warm up session and we were both feeling a little nervous. The session went without issue and as expected our main competitor had come with an engine upgrade making him noticeably quicker. When Alan came in at the end of the session he was noticeably feeling the added pressure but as I mentioned to him, this was effectively our first session and as long as he did what he did the day would come to us.

Qualifying The first of the points scoring sessions and again Alan went out towards the front of the pack. I was continually talking to Alan on the pit to car radio giving Alan continuous updates. For most of the session he was some 1+sec behind the time of our competitor. With 5mins left I gave the call to Alan to push and the next lap he closed the gap by over a second so he was now only 0.1sec behind. Then a nightmare happened and someone had an off causing the red flag to come out. Shortly after, they announced that the session would not be restarted meaning we lost by 0.1sec.
This was a dissaster and meant if we did not win the final we would loose the championship.

Final As Alan put it 'go hard or go home'. From the start of the session Alan lead in the battle for the win and never looked back. He pushed the car hard and as he said after, 'it was messy but it got the job done'. As I waited in the pitlane at the end of the session with Wayne we could barely contain ourselfs as we knew Alan had won by over 1 sec.
The championship was ours, even though we were tied on points we had 4 wins to Jeff's 2 wins, so on count back the title would be ours. You couldn't get a closer finish if you tried. What a battle.
When Alan came into sight the car sounded rough and once in the garage we soon found that a bolt which holds the wastegate on had snapped. He truly left nothing out there.

Time Attack UK was stated in 2005 and the first round was at Rockingham. As it happened we were there that year attending the supporting car show. As we walked around the various stands we came across the Time Attack stand and whilst looking round it I remember saying to Alan that this was something that we could do.

Later that year after Alan's engine in his Sierra GT had blown up following a track day at Trax, we decided to build our first track car which we acquired in kit form in February 2006. It's first outing was in October 2006 at Cadwell Park then Donington Park in November.

In 2007 the car was out somewhere every month including doing the Nurburg Cannonball, later to be renamed the Nurburg 700. It was during this year that we came across Time Attack again this time at Donington Park where we had track time booked....... The rest as they say is history.

hay mate, not much has happened with the car since the NEC show.
after the NEC I put the car between the house and the garage as it needed to be emptied and was being lazy really to leave it
but this turned out to be a lazy choice of a god sent because that week we had those high winds and the garage roof started to calopse
in and if the car was in there would taken out the back window.
took few weeks but I found a garage in oxford without an asbestos roof.
started putting it up just before Christmas and even worked on Christmas day.
the garage is up but its far from finished still need to level the floor with screed, painted, electrics and finish some concreting around the frame.

on the way home with the garage a couple panels got broke which gave me a great idea to add a side door and additional windows.
its 1 half feet wider and 4ft longer than the old one so be able to work on it in the garage now.

this how it sits
Image
Image
Image

last weekend I went to replace the track rod ends as the steering was feeling a bit vague at the last round of time attack and under braking
the steering wheel vibrated a lot.
so got under the car and found it was split
Image

HOWEVER this turned out not to really be the cause of the problem
Image

the steering rack had come loose, bolt was not screwed in I could just lift it up so it has been coming loose all season, time for some lock tight

there are some goodies for the car coming this week so ill add picks once they turn up and they will help the car be quicker over a lap :D

throughout last season we seemed to be having issues with cornering speeds through the medium to high speed corners with the front a lot of the time trying to slide out which was very frustrating.
after looking at a fair few photo's it is clear that the fronts were gaining positive camber and the back was still maintaining negative camber.
its frustrating as cornering speed used to be our strength.

so I have bought some adjustable lower suspension arms along with new ARB bushes that bolt onto the chassis
this should help us quite a lot I'm hoping.

hopefully mate, hoping for better turn in and be able to carry more speed through the corners.
we'll know how much of a difference it will make once we get to brands hatch and croft as long as its dry as that's the places
we went to and didn't really have any issues.
