Money CAN buy happiness...sometimes!

Post by MrBrooks »

I'm thinking of going down the turbo charging route pretty damn soon. I'd like to buy a TD04L however, I've got a few questions.

1. Should I buy the TD04L-13T and then buy either:
A) TD04L-19T cartridge and swap them. What additional work would be involved in this - bore out the compressor housing?
B) Buy the ARD Tuning 19T compressor wheel conversion as this has the appropriate clearance as the 19T compressor wheel isn't tall enough to clear the stock CHRA body? Then a straight swap from 13T to 19T can happen without any milling.
C) Spend a little bit more and get a TD04L-19T straight up to avoid any hassle/further costs?

2) What maintenance work am I looking at to ensure the turbo setup doesn't fail on me spectacularly? Just regular servicing every 5,000 miles/1 year, what oil, etc?

3) Is there anything I need to be wary about when buying a TD04L, i.e. play in compressor wheel, knocking/ticking etc?

Thanks!

Was anybody else expecting references to a lottery ticket, Russian mail order brides and Veyrons?

I was thinking similar to you Pez :D

How much does a proper FI set-up cost on a 5 like yours? The turbo, FMIC, ECU, fitting and fueling was pretty much 5k on one when I looked (admittedly an older model) . So if you're thinking of spending 5k+ on one (plus brakes, tyres, clutch, suspension, insurance) I'd sell your current car and add the 5k to the money, buying something like an R32/33 GTR instead :D

Sorry..........being sensible here, your best bet for forum based advice is probably Nutz as so many of the guys on there have Fi 5's. I'm pretty sure that Chris Barnes and Chris/Hoodedreeper are the only guys on here with FI 5's right now.

Fair play for the continued investment though ;)
