Maybe a high miler Nissan Pulasr GTiR would be the closest to XR4x4 money, however personally I'd go for the Ford every time if for no other reason than it being a cool piece of 80's machinery

Decent 4x4 Sierra's are still out there for sub 2k mate, but they are few and far between. My Brother and team TNT have often sent me links over the years saying 'look at this' with examples on owners forums etc for silly money (as in cheap). The performance and running costs are both in a lower league than the Pulsar but there we are. As a stock model I found the XR4x4 to be really tame. It was only when it had far less weight, a far stiffer chassis thanks to the cage and strut bracing and the lower ratio diff (thanks Pabs and Bart) that it started to come alive.
Running a Pulsar for five seasons HARD would probably cost a small fortune; Trev would know more than me on that one, but then again a standard performance, stripped Pulsar with the same mods as my Sierra would be much, much quicker I think.

I've a friend selling a RWD Sierra Saphire 1.8 if you're interested? Although I'm not sure if it'll help, I'm unsure if it's an MK1, MK2 etc. I'm no good with Fords! I think it's up for £1300-£1400, condition is good for it's age.

These 2 are very rare as there was only ever 55, 2.8 xr4x4 registered on an F plate.

Wasn't there also a 2.9 twin turbo version that was knocking on for 300bhp or did I just imagine it?

Back in the early 90's my mate used to work in a video shop, his boss had a lockup around the back where we were 'allowed' to spend hours washing his cars in return for free video rentals. Come to think of it the guy was clearly taking the piss.....oh the naivety of youth.
I'm pretty sure the XR4x4i that he owned was a 2.9 rather than a 2.8, my mate used to rave about how it was the quickest car on the road?!?
Considering the other car was a Saphire Cosworth (albeit a nasty light gold coloured thing) the only way that I can see that the XR4x4i was quicker would be if it was a tweaked after market jobby.
It had WRC style spot lamps on the front, I don't know if they were fitted as standard......though they must be good for an extra 10bhp

the best way to know an original MINKER is that the boost pipes are welded through the front slam panel.

nice looking car indeed, is this a 1.8 chasseur?
