The other week I figured that as it's stopped snowing, raining, hailing, blowing a gale etc.....I'd treat the car to a new car cover (hmmm??)
So I measured it at approximately 13.5 feet and so naturally assumed that a 'Large' cover for cars up to 15 feet in length would suffice......alas no, I hadn't factored in the BGW

Yesterday we picked up an 'Extra Large' cover so fingers crossed that will fit, something has to go right this week regarding this build!

Ha it's all a learning curve. If it's all ready by July when I'm over then we can get it in on the mounts

I think on a technicality....in as much as it's a car cover and the car 'is' technically 'covered' I am going to call this a success
That wing sits really bloody high, I hope that in reality it proves that it is more go than show!
The Extra Large still doesn't quite cover the rear wheels but is about as good as I'm going to get I think

Yep!! our car cover looks like that as well and our deep front bumper doesn't help either

I like the fact that if you try really hard you can look at it and convince yourself that underneath the cover lurks a car that's almost complete

Right I'm sacking it for the night. Through trial, error and a bit more research on the OZ tinterwebz' sites I realised this evening that I had put the wrong water pipe on the passenger side turbo, I have just swapped it over for one that actually fits perfectly (it was tucked away in a box). I'll have to modify one of the old pipes in the morning as the second water pipe for that particular turbo (which was supplied by the spaz' specialist) is bent and buckled to buggery!
The alternator and brackets are now fitted to the engine along with the brackets and bolts for attaching the PAS pump (which is still hanging off the car at the moment) so I'll fit that in the morning also.
I've ordered some rubber caps for blanking off the PCV's and need to spend some time later measuring up for the extra silicone hoses. For some reason it's the little shitty jobs that seem to be taken the longest to complete.

Im looking to purchase the original service manuals with colour wiring diagram one too from the US if you are interested in getting one in too and splitting the postage
It cuts out all the BS that is plagued on some of the forums of people that heard something off a mate down the pub and all the information is there for you

Yesterday was another productive day
First job on the list was to sort the stud on the drivers side of the engine in order to fit the other AMS manifold as this was also too long and catching
approx. 3/4 of an inch was removed

Though the performance stats of the AMS kit is impressive it appears that build consistency and quality control is lacking. The OEM washers actually fit on this side?

Re-assembling the turbo's has taken quite a while due to having to dig through piles of nuts and bolts in my 'spares' box in order to find the correct sizes but I'm happy to report that both turbo's are now 99% done (I just need to order some more copper washers)
All four turbo water pipes are now fitted having spent hours modifying them, replacing them and/or cleaning each of them through thoroughly. They now all sit in the correct location and clear well, though I am slightly concerned about how close one of them sit to the manifold.
One of the pipes that had been fitted previously, clearly it had been made up and fitted by a complete chimp!! It was pretty badly bent, twisted and buckled, so much so that I believe it would have restricted the water flow to the turbo.


Therefore I manipulated it and opened it back up (very carefully so as to avoid splitting it) and have managed to get a good flow through it. This is the one pipe that sits quite close to the manifold however.

I'm using high temperature Samco water hose but obviously I want to ensure that none of the hoses actually touch the manifold itself.
Is it necessary to fit a heat resistant cover to these hoses as additional protection or is that not required?
The plenum was the next job on the list.
I took to it with a dremmel and a file and have tidied the lot up, the underside of the plenum now has far less excess piping which should again make for a far less complicated and cluttered engine layout.




I then set about stripping the PAS pump out of the engine bay of the zed
As mine is a late '95 TT model it didn't have the hydraulic HICAS fitted from the factory, instead it was fitted with electronic HICAS which ultimately meant that it didn't need the big chunky old style PAS pump and was fitted with the much smaller, lighter (and simpler) NA PAS pump.
The whole HICAS system has been removed anyway and replaced with a DW HICAS replacement kit, however the PAS pump is still required for obvious reasons.
You can see here how much smaller the NA pump is compared to the old TT pump.

The OEM pulley was removed
and has been replaced with a nice lightweight Unorthodox Racing alloy pulley

Another slight oversight on my part was (as before) I had forgotten to re-fit the actuator to the drivers side turbo. Not to be defeated I atempted to re-fit it with all of the turbo and mani' gubbins still in place.
I soon realised that the actuator on the drivers side actually goes on the inside of the turbo rather than on the outside of the turbo as on the passenger side
It was a bit fiddly but I've proven that it can be done.

Next job on the list is to measure up and purchase the new braided fuel hoses and AN fittings
