Well I've been chipping away at this trying to salvage what I can from the old fooked' engine (nuts and bolts etc.) and it's been well worth the effort as at least now I have the correct bolts and ancillaries all in the right places.....very much as a piece came off it was cleaned up and re-fitted to the new engine so couldn't really go wrong

Image

the plenum has been sorted with new hoses, bolts and other bits (again I've been marking each part just so that I know exactly where it is supposed to go when re-fitting, it takes a bit longer but it's been well worth the extra effort as I'm not having to constantly refer back to the user manual or photos)

This is how the old engine looks now

Image

there's nothing too obviously wrong with it other than the horrendous amount of oil and fuel in places where oil and fuel just aren't supposed to be!

Image

No pistons or rods through the block or anything like that but the oil in the sump was really gritty with tiny particles of metal (and a random bit of silicone sealant in the filter?)

Image

I've been cracking on with the turbo rebuilds and have only just realised that the gaskets for the turbo/downpipe that I have are 4 bolt whereas the new turbos are 5 bolt, so I've just ordered a new set of 5 bolt gaskets

Image

Luckily the HKS turbo elbows that I had off Christian are 5 bolt whereas the old aftermarket downpipes from the old engine were 4 bolt

I appreciate that this build is a bit boring and slow but I'm learning as I'm going and writing this up more as a log for future reference than anything else, it won't be long now I'm sure :driving:

I actually find your engine rebuild interesting as iam used to doing old school V8s , so an indepth injected twin turbo rebuild makes a nice change . It does look quite complicated what with all the sensors and wiring that goes with these newer engines , i do look under the bonnet of my scooby sometimes and then just close it again and go and do some googling . Anyway it looks like an awesome car you have there and good luck with the rebuild . Pete

Thanks mate, I'm trying to simplify the engine itself as much as possible by reducing and re-routing a lot of the vacuum hoses and redundant sensors and believe that I've managed to reduce the lengths of intercooler/turbo inlet/TB intake piping by at least 50% overall

The biggest problem with the VG once fitted of course is actually getting access in order to conduct maintenance and repairs, so the more excess clutter that can be removed the better I think.

I'm hoping to have the bulk of the engine sorted within the next week or so

Could I get some thoughts on this?

As I said I've been swapping bits over from the knackered engine to the new engine and have found that some of the bits that were deleted on the old engine have not been deleted on the new engine.

This is a pic of how I had planned for the two blue Samco turbo/water hoses to run to the left and right hand side turbos. The large water pipes at the back of the engine usually run to the heater matrix however this has been binned.

Image

If I connect the two large ends of the water pipes together, that should solve the problem of having removed the heater matrix from the equation, Yes/No?

The plenum water bypass is already done/about to be done so there are a few small excess hard pipes pipes/ports that branch off the large water pipes, as it stands in the picture above there is a third small hard pipe branched off so this obviously needs to be closed off in some way.

Therefore my thoughts are to move the right hand Samco hose from its current position and then connect that small hard pipe to the third small pipe with a length of braided hose like so:

Image

the Samco hose (that had just been removed from the right) could then be moved to the old redundant plenum water bypass pipe that runs down the right hand side of the engine, this Samco hose could then be run to the right hand turbo like so

Image

From the pictures shown, appreciating that they aren't the most detailed pics, but as long as all water pipes are connected and/or sealed off and form a loop enabling the water to pass through the engine, turbos and back to the rad etc. then shouldn't this be fine?

Edit: I can't even remember now if that hard pipe running down the right hand side of the engine was for the plenum water bypass or originally for the turbo anyway? Still I suppose it makes no odds as long as the turbos are getting water...

Connect 2 bigs yes.

Here is the back of my engine and coolant pipes

Image

You can see all 3 are used

Once the turbos are on it makes more sense
