You still need to weld the inner back to the outer after you've cut and modified for clearance

Could somebody advise as to a suitable welder for doing basic DIY spot welding of the rear arches etc?

On the rear arches I have this pic for you where the outer skin has been cut then the inner was tabbed up and welded after this pic was taken but I must have deleted that pic.

On the RB side of things it's quite an easy swap now with modifying the subframe by basically cutting a portion out and welding a plate in so the sump clears.

I've used one of these for years:

With the gassless wire, for sure its more spattery than a gas mig, but its not as bad as some would have you believe and for the occasional repair and odd spot weld here or there its fine and a lot less faff. And you can always buy gas and do it that way if you dont get on with the gassless.

If you specifically want a spot welder then I havnt a clue <- Captain helpful.

Cheers mate that looks pretty ideal to me

Out of interest if the rear arch wasn't cut and was just rolled and smacked up and out of the way, typically how much of a gap would you need between the top of the tyre and the lip of the rear arch to avoid rubbing during spring compression?

Not the prettiest but it covers the 11" wide wheels, which is what I was after

the drivers side is cut ready to go on, I just need to prep the arch (read: knock fuck out of it with a big mallet!)

I haven't determined the best place for the new fuel system yet but as low as possible will obviously be better

I uncovered a possible cause of some of the niggling electric gremlins





the hydro handbrake had been fitted when the carpet was still in the car and unbeknown to us we'd drilled straight through this, which was concealed underneath the carpet

there are so many redundant wires from Jap DIY fitment of turbo timers, EBC, alarm, immobiliser etc. that it's just painful trying to sort through it all

at least the weather is pretty good at the moment so I can get cracking in relative comfort.....not sure how long my interest will hold out though, I'm very easily distracted

I figured today was just as good a day as any to get cracking on stripping the bits that I need off the old engine

the weight of the engine and gearbox had already trashed the front of the workshop but hey ho, it's being replaced anyway


the gearbox came off relatively easily

then it was a case of removing the clutch, the bolts had a bit of surface rust but after a quick soaking in DW40 they started to come out one by one

of course you always get one little bastard that doesn't want to play ball....it just wouldn't budge!!


and then it started to round off resulting in lots of :rant:

I literally tried everything, I even tried to drill it out....but it just wouldn't budge



so just as the rain started to hammer it down I had no choice but to get out the dremmel

Sod's law, when I'd got to this stage the remaining threaded part simply came out by hand

a quick tidy up on the bench and it doesn't look too bad

then it was off with the flywheel (the improvised lock out bar worked a treat)

Busy man. I'm seeing a lot more stripping than building so whats the plan for the car?
