[quote="jap.slapper"]Out of interest how do GTX2863R compare with T88 performance and cost wise? The main reason I was looking at he T88 option was due to the fact that the turbo itself can be picked up second hand for around

I was going to say, I think the ball-ache would still be there it would just have a different shape and the bills would have GTR tax :)

Fair comment chief and I understand where you're coming from but if it was a GTR that was sat on my drive rather than this piece of crap zed then this would just be a 15 minute bolt on job as the T88 that I've been eyeing up comes with an RB26 specific bolt on mani'.

As it is I've spent hours now drawing bone sketches and taking measurements whilst stood out in the pissing rain all in the hope that my deluded 'it can't be that hard to get it to fit a VG' attitude holds some credibility

and of course there's the fact that at the end of your GTR ball ache you can look back at the motor parked on your drive (or in it's vacuum packed Winter onesie) and justify the extra effort and expense in the knowledge that you own a GTR and not just any old GTR but a well set up and awesome looking example of a GTR

whereas the extra effort and expense of attempting to make this zed equally as special can't be rationalised in the same way as no matter how you look at it or what is done to it, it's still (and always will be) the GTR's stumpy and slightly overweight cousin with the woggle eye and club foot that lives on James Turner Street that the cool kids never want to invite to the party, but mum always insists upon it out of sympathy

The only way out of this depressing state that I see is for said cousin to be able to cover the quarter mile in GTR comparable times (or better) or be able to lap certain circuits in similar times.....the latter is extremely unlikely and therefore woggle eyed cousin needs to improve his quarter mile times other wise he'll only ever be of value in parts alone

ignore my whinging, I guess I've just lost interest now...yet again!!!

Thinking completely put of the box now, but what about rear mounting the T88 instead of trying to fit it in the engine bay?

If I recall correctly one of the guys from Redline magazine and DW (Stav I think it was?) was going to do something similar on his FC with a rear mounted turbo. Currently the only issue I can see mounting a T88 either way in the zed is the fact of how tight the space is either side of the engine block, as I've recently learnt custom metal pipework will be required, at the very least to get to the fmic and back to the TB's.

I have plenty of space in between the fmic and the rad now that all of the excess clutter has been binned from there. Exhaust exit and transfer of temps is another consideration of course.

The major factor for eventually deciding against carrying out an engine conversion right now was associated cost (I had already toyed with the idea of a VH45/2JZ/RB26 swap) but as I'd need to replace gearbox, clutch, prop and possibly sub-frames etc. I opted against it for the time being.

I figure that if I could get some custom pipework made up to run from each of the VG heads back to this RB mani' (that would be mounted in the void between the fmic and rad) then in theory it could work. As the stock pair of turbos, mani's, intake pipework, downpipes and actuators etc. would no longer be in the stock location cluttering up either side of the block then that would free up some space for the new pipework.

That's ^^^^^ not yours is it mate?

I've only ever heard of a handful of RB swaps into zeds, that looks to be sitting pretty low in the engine bay so I suspect some sub-frame tweaks were required

Z1 in the US are claiming the GT675RS tubs with supporting head work, IC and race fuel (whatever the US guys consider to be 'race fuel'?) should achieve 700rwhp.
So with an over estimate of 17% loss through the drivetrain that's around 819 bhp at the flywheel, which should be enough to get a zed into mid 11's to high 10's I think

a T88 would be good for around 1000 bhp with supporting mods which I suspect would get a zed down to the low 10's with current gearing, but I suspect that the box would shit itself well before achieving this...

I think it's the first 60 ft that the zed is pretty poor at and I suspect a stock box, even a newly rebuilt one, wouldn't last too long after being subjected to a few hard launches so that's a potential weak point as well.

On a side note I'm a fan of what Matt Fenton has done with his zed, aptly nicknamed 'Bane'

Lol, no, just thinking of ways to free up a bit more engine bay space :)

:smilielol5::smilielol5:your posts do crack me up chief. But don't lose faith, the zed will do track or drag well enough for you to really enjoy it once it's done. Mine was pretty handy on a circuit when it was sorted and I'd love to have lap times to compare it to the zed.

Quick question, is there any structural integrity provided by the outer skin of the rear quarters or can the outer skin be cut away completely and covered by the FRP over fender?

The reason I ask, this evening I bought a pair of Rota's (18" x 11" wide) for the rear and figure that I need as much space under the rear arches as possible and didn't want to run the risk of the tyres catching (305 Hoosier slicks, so pretty straight/flush side walls with zero stretch).

I recall seeing Umar Masood's FD rear arches, they were pretty much completely cut away for rim and tyre clearance purposes and were then covered over with a bad ass' wide arch kit. I just wasn't sure if there was a lot of welding required and whether or not it would have a detrimental effect on the structural integrity of the shell.

Any suggestions guys?
