I never buy any fiction books in real format anymore preferring to buy them on the Kindle, mainly because I love technology and love the ability to carry loads and loads of books without the backache associated with that (especially when going on holiday!).

Lee Child, Chris Ryan, Andy Mcnab books are really good and also love biographies with Ranulph Fiennes, Bear Grylls, Ron Jeremy (yes, surprisingly interesting) and even Arnies book being recent favourites. If you can get the books written by former SAS members telling of the time they spent then they are always pretty inspiring, funny and genuinely humbling.

So with the Gok book then Stu, is there a big reveal once it has been cooked ?!!!? His Dad owned a restaurant didn't he so he grew up learning culinary skills.

My wife has asked for the new George Clarke book that accompanies his new Amazing Spaces series and my eldest is whizzing through the old Percy Jackson and Greek God epics at the moment so quite a bit of paperback buying for me in the coming weeks

I've just finished Sir Jackie Stewart's autobiography (a very good read by the way) and am currently working my way through a few other F1 autobiographies

As for the many ex Hereford cringe worthy dit spinners of this world I think I've read most of the factual books by former members of the Regiment and with the exception of a very select few (Freefall by Nish Bruce being a stand out example) the rest are by and large in my opinion just stroking their own ego's and embellishing pretty run of the mill operations through a period when only a small number actually fired a shot in anger

I'm not taking anything away from the old days of SF in NI, the first Gulf war and certainly not intending to belittle the tales told in countless UK pubs by the 117 ex blades who were on the balcony that day, but I find the recent written accounts by your everyday squaddies and booties in Afghan are far more inspiring and heart wrenching than the majority of the old and bold smash...

just my humble 2p worth

The last time I bought a book.... That's pretty tough, but I'm sure it was my huge ledger size 'Earth' book. Contains satellite, thermal, tidal patterns, seasonal photos etc of the entire earth from space. :)

Last book I bought was Vietnam by Ishikawa Bunyo

Image

Published in 1986 has taken me quite some time to get a copy that wasn't stupid money!!, found this one in japan.

I'm a bit of a collector of books by combat journalists and have actually invested more money in books than I have probably on my car :)

My most prized book

My other favourite is DPM - Disruptive Pattern Material: An Encyclopaedia of Camouflage: Nature, Military and Culture,by Maharishi a book that now costs near

There is just something about a book that the likes of the kindle can never replace.

That's very true

My wife loves her Kindle but it just doesn't do it for me, there's more to reading a book than just....well...reading it I suppose (if that even makes sense?) What I mean is when reading a book you get so much more feedback from it, the touch and textures of the pages and cover, the smell (I'd just like to point out that I don't sniff books for pleasure as that would just be strange but you don't get the same scent from a Kindle.....should I just drop the smell bit as it's making me sound a bit strange I think!!)

With a book you also get to see how far you've read, how much further you have to go etc.

not to mention the fact that if you've had the mis-fortune of reading a particularly shite book you can always use it to light the stove, whereas a Kindle (despite the misleading name) makes for pretty crap kindling....
