Great update and progress. I thought our engine bay was cramped and confused until I saw yours. Great work:thumbs:

Cheers bud

The plan is to get the pressure washer out tomorrow and give it a proper dig out. Once the 18 years worth of oil and grime has been removed I'll be able to get in there and see what else can be binned.

Well the pressure washer turned out to be as much use as a fart in a spacesuit!!

as our outdoor taps are fed from a rain scavenging tank the pressure just isn't there to feed sufficient water for the washer

back to basics it was and with a bucket of warm soapy water I set about the grimy engine bay

This is pretty much what it was like throughout

Image

and with hours of scrubbing and scraping it's starting to look like this

Image

I got bored so moved on to something different

So I set about playing with the rear arches.....

If at all possible I want to avoid cutting out and welding the rear arches and therefore I started to experiment with them just to see what could be achieved with a little gentle persuasion from a mallet

now until I get the new 11" or 12" wide rims on the back I won't actually know if simply knocking the arches up and out of the way will work? This is one for later on down the line......though this experiment was good for venting a bit of frustration!!

then it was back into the workshop to do a couple of basic bits and pieces

Pairing up and cleaning the HKS turbo elbows with the relevant turbo was one such job, just to pass a bit of time

Image

and fitting the Cometic head gaskets was another simple job, though there was a little burring on the mounting pins on the block that needed a little bit of filing down

Image

all in all not the most productive of days but every little helps and all that.....

I think I used a whole can of engine degreaser and a couple of paint brushes to work it into the grease when I did the engine bay on our old car. Areal pisser of a job but so satisfying when done. Good work and as you said every little helps.

Buy some Bilt-Hamber Surfex HD, spray it on the grease, go and make a cuppa, drink the cuppa, agitate the the Surfex with a brush, take the cup back indoors, rinse the Surfex off.

Done. Surfex is crazy strong.......I only ever use it 50/50 with water if absolutely necessary, and much prefer to use it at 10:1 (Water:Surfex)

I am really impressed with one particular ebay seller/company (jdm-evo-bits)

I contacted them late Tuesday afternoon to see if we could strike a deal on an Evo 4 PAS cooler that I'd been looking at and after a few e-mails back and forth we agreed a price and they said that they'd get it posted that same day.

On Wednesday morning it arrived at my front door and was spot on

So here it is

Image

This morning I set about finding a place to mount it on the car

this looked like an ideal spot as I figured it should get a good flow of cool air through the opening on the front bumper

Image

and as suspected the location works really well

Image

*ignore the alignment with the front wing, I haven't got around to bolting it back into place yet

Now I'm off to measure up and buy some Samco piping for it, I think some more of that heat sleeve might be a good shout as well
