Ford Capri V6 engine noise

Post by drifter »

One for you Ford boys :D

The boss has just got his fully rebuilt engine in and it's making a wiring noise. It's stroked and bored 2.8 engine which has the crank and cam gears direct mesh, no chain or anything.

We're thinking it's these gears making the noise?

1. Does the noise go away when the clutch is depressed? - Relaese bearing

2. Power steering pump. Disconnect the belt to the power steering reservoir and start car.

3. Water pump bearing worn.

Checked the clutch and the power steering pump, as far as I know it has a new water pump. I'll ask the question :)

Apparently one of the gears is now an ally version instead of the standard fibre type. The engine builder says this is causing the noise but should go after about 500 miles?

It could be the timing gears as i know that when they fit steel gears in place of the chain drive on chevy V8's they make a similar noise , a bit like the whine you get with a supercharger . Pete

Thanks Pete, Sounds just the same :) Do you know if the sound tends to go away after a few miles of is it permanent?

No the noise doesn't go with the steel gears and are you sure its made of ali as i wouldn't want to be running toothed gears made of that . Pete

I'll let him know it might not go, he won't be happy with that I don't think.

When he spoke to the builder he asked about the new gear. He was expecting mainly steel with a fibre outer, but was definitely told it was an all ally gear.

you sure its an alloy gear and not steel as i know me and paul were looking at getting a new gear for ours.

is the new gear on the cam or the crank?
this is what burton do, an all steel gear that sits on the cam.

im a bit jubious about a steel gear against a fibre one as the fibre could wear down as the friction is different between the materials.
once the noise has stopped id be inclined to take the cover plate of and inspect the gears.
