Not long got back from Gordon's after leaving at 05.45 this morning. Shit day from the off and then to find towards the end of the day that we were potentialy running up to 100bhp less than we should have had at snetterton last year didn't put me in the best of moods.
Look forwards to the updated report

Yesterday. I got to Alan's just before 6am as we wanted to make an early start to avoid the M6 traffic to Gordon's. 1st job was to move Alan's car so we could get the Sierra out.
Alan's gt decided it wasn't to play and even after trying to jump start it with the Frontera no joy. It's a problem that he has had before sometimes and he doesn't knmow how or why but the engine gets damp inside the engine and as explained, That's it, no going to Gordon's early as it was a long job to get it started and by then it would be rush hour traffic.
To get it to start he had to take the airfilter off and then warm up the engine with a hair dryer by blowing hot air into the air intake whilst holing open the throttle. After about 10mins turn the engine over to open other valves and repeat until eventually it fired into life.
Now, to avoid any other problems once we got Alans car started and he was leaving it running I suggested that we start the Sierra to make sure all was ok before going to Gordons and it started first turn of the key....Good.
After sitting around drinking tea for just over an hour we decided to set off and yep the Sierra now wouldn't start so get the frontera again and jump start it. Which it did and even started too easy but at least we were on our way albeit 3 hours later than planned.
After a very pleasant drive over to Gordons we arrived just after 10 to be met by a massive jigsaw puzzle

Before we got started Alan put it together using a photo we took before taking it apart, just to see what went where.

After a couple of hours it started to look like a gearbox as we needed Gordons help who was going from job to job.

We were now on the home run, just had to fit it back into the casing and build up the 3 sections of the gearbox.

By 5.30pm the gear was all built and that meant we just had to swapp the engine mapps and check everything over on the dyno....half hour tops.

With the car strapped on the dyno and everything warmed up, Gordon swapped the map and ran it up on the dyno.

He called Alan over and all of a sudden there was a flurry of activity around the engine. The car was only making 18psi of boost instead of the 26psi that it was set to.
Not happt was an understatement.....After a lot of checking things Gordon came to the conclusion that a little plastic restrictor in one of the boost pipes was not resticting the boost causing the wastegate to open to early.
Once this was changed the boost came back and I have to say when Gordon did a full throttle run going through the gears I can't believe how quickly it went through the gears especially as Gordon was taking it to the shift light in in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
So the car feels great and Alan and Wayne plan to fit the rebuilt gearbox Saturday morning.

As the car has only been to santa pod since Snetterton last year and at the pod Alan was complaing of having no boost in 3rd we cannot be sure when this issue happened and it's possible that we were down on boost at Snetterton last year.....
But...it is what it is and we can't change the past. The engine is going well and the car touch wood feels atrong, so roll on Sunday.

Yes we do have a boost gauge fitted.
In all fairness to Alan he's had his hands full trying to get the best out of the car and with all our past problems with overheating Alans attention has been more focused on water temperature, oil temps, oil pressure and Exhaust gas temps.
Boost drop off doesn't usually kill an engine on its own. Well I don't think it does.
We've already talked about this and it will now be something we check in the first 2 laps but feck me that boost gauge moves stupidly quick. We might need to think about moving it. You can't even read the gauges frrom the passenger seat....................Just had an idea.
