Sorry to hear about your gearbox troubles. hope it's not an expensive fix.

Gutted we didn't get to take eachother out in our cars but always next time.

Hopefully by then i'll have the boost issue fixed and have a decent set of tyres.
Jesus !

Boost issue and crap tyres and you still went that fast ????? God only knows what it will go like when you fix those issues !

I seem to remember that your power level is right on the threshold of boomage* on a GTR box. I suspect that an upgraded 5 speed GTR box may be the way forwards mate. Have you contacted Mark Moseley on here? (max1) He may well have the bits or advice that you are looking for......

*boomage is a word that I just made up, but I like it so if you want to use it in future, knock yourself out

Yes, Stuart is right. You have been lucky for it to have done so well. Mark knows his stuff of course. Ron at RK tuning and Rod Bell at RB would be able to help too with OS Giken stuff.

Good luck.

Yep thats absolutely right. I have done well so far as anything more than 550bhp and you're a fat man on thin ice with a stock 'box. Further investigation has revealed that 6 speeders are not good for much more than the 5s, and are then mega difficult to get bits for if/when they do let go.

Spoke to RB earlier and OS giken stuff is on back order. Whifbitz can get me PPG gear kit 1-4 but I nearly fell off my chair when he told me how much, even at mates rates.

So after various conversations the general advice from the skyline tuners is buy another box and bung it in in the hope it lasts the season, then do an uprated build in the winter when i can afford not be using it and the bits are available. Dave the gearbox man is currently rummaging through the boxes at RK to find the best one.

I think this approach makes sense, becasue to rebuild mine i'd only be using second hand bits anyway.

Thanks for the input guys

Christian,

Thanks for the kind words as ever. I would have suggested a standard re-built box, as your has lasted very well so far and no reason to suspect it wouldn't give you as good service again once rebuilt ... as long as you stay off that magic silver knob :)

I think tyre wise we need to get a setup that uses the whole tyre (i.e. more front camber) and we can then get a better view of the tyres. The Cups have softer sidewalls so exaggerate the problem.

All for now

So, "new" box and tx went in today. Swung up to RK to pick it up while daz whipped the old one out. Forgot to take any pics tho.

Having the 'box out identified a little oil weep form the head drain so hopefully have solved that previously unknown problem. Also put a new set of rear pads in the car as the ones in there were not only low, but had also seen better days (as well as clearly some heat :) )

The "new" box is unbelievably whiny in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. And when I say noisy, if I didn't know better I'd say it already had a gear kit in it - which it hasn't. However, if it's judst noise then thats fine, if it goes pop then it's not. Various conversations to have but I'm not too worried atm.

Also been talking to a few people with R32 racing experience - Ron, and the Kindness's (who were at Darrens as they've bought his 2dr Scoob shell to replace Fee's R32 racecar that she rolled recently) and I may have some slight alignemnet mods to make, along with putting my old 1000lbs front springs back on (I swapped them for 800s) if i can find them, and also IKEYA bottom arms on the front.

So, looking at the calendar to see when i can swerve work and get back out, can't wait (even if my new gearbox does already sound fucked....)

When we first fitted our engine and gearbox, the box use to whine like a bitch in first gear so much so it sounded like we had quaife straight cut box fitted. Turned out to be a bolt that had been slightly over tightened.

We may yet end up with a skyline box in our car as there is a conversion that would allow us to run one and supposedly they can cope with 600+bhp.

Interesting Pablo, although as mentioned above GTR boxes are generally thought to be good for 550bhp with an RB26 before they're on the edge, Although the torque I think is what kills them, not sure what torque the cossie lumps put out.

Not a great update today I'm afraid :( Went to Snett for Eddie's Dealer Day and was really thinking it would be a corker - what a great facility for a group to have for a TD. Thoroughly top do and well done Eddie, I'll be there next year.

This week has been pretty stressful GTR wise. I noticed that since the new box went in the AFR guage had packed up. I had a look and unsurprisingly drew a blank - but that will come as no surprise to anyone who knows me! It was eventually traced to the loom being pinched when the box went in. However it transpired that this created a dead short and toasted my AEM guage :( Not happy. But it still begged the question, could I still go on thursday (this was Tuesday). Unable to get hold of Ryan at 2bar I jsut didn't know how the car was mapped - did it need the guage functioning to correctly read the AFRs or as it's such a to end unit did it do it's own thing? Eventually Whifbitz gave me another AEM wideband to use that he had on the shelf which was a result, good lad. Then last night Ryan called me apologetically having bust his ankle. He said no problem to run without a guage, jsut need to switch something on/off in the software. Good to know.

So this morning I was sooooooo looking forward to having a good day at snett, with plans to play with suspension set up and then once dialled back in, try and break into a time under my PB of 2:10 dead, or even string a single good lap together to achieve my possible times.

However after a warm up session i let dad out in the car. I went for my second go and invited Eddie out with me. We had a bit of a go although I wasn't really too dialled in by that point. However, after a quick entry into riches we rapidly gained on a radical which was chasing a race Aston V8 Vantage, they both had to slow for someone exiting the pit. We all passed the pit exiter once passed riches but as the aston began to brake for the hairpin, the radical totally over reacted and slammed on, I hit the brakes and the GTR went sideways, I held it but that was really strange, it's never anything but rock steady under brakes.

Still, rather than dwell on it I decided the best option was to get the red mist and over take both the offending Radical and the Aston. Both scalps were taken at the end of the bentley straight and into the esses and began to make some good progress away from them (if not quite as perfect on my lines as I'd have liked).
