To be honest will probably wait until the weekend and get the new wheel out of the garage and on/near the car - difference might not be as noticable on the car.

My rattle can skills are terrible at best so reserved only for tidying up repaired rust and/or broken paint :) (Can't even do that too well, always end up with a lip between new paint and old!)

Have found out that 11B - Mazda Driftwood is a similar finish to the rota bronze that my old wheels are so if i'm not happy with the wheels i'll maybe spray them that colour... shall see :D - Other option is Fiat 750 Marron Volciano;

Got someone viewing my 5 series on saturday so shall see if that sells then crack on with the subframe - removed one of the four bushes now which took about 1/2 an hour (should be loads quicker now I know what i'm doing).

Cheers,
Alex

So bit of an update, got distracted away from the R32 for a while as I sold my 530D and bought another S2000 as a replacement daily and have been driving it a fair old amount (been to Edinburgh and back and planning my trip to the Italian F1 @ Monza in it)

Image

Anyway back to the R32 the past couple of weekends. I got the subframe bushes out after lots of drilling, sawing, swearing, some more drilling and then finally some sawing. What a complete... of a job.

Cleaned up the subframe with wire wheels and paint/rust remover before giving it a liberal coating of Hammerite black. Was going to get it powder coated but everywhere I spoke to wanted what I considered far too much money.

The Whiteline subframe bushes were fitted with the help of MRC (audi tuning specialists in Banbury) and I started to get ready to drop the old subframe.

Got the car up in the air and axle stands on the chassis rails with big blocks of wood to hopefully spread the load and prevent any damage (fingers crossed!) Put spare wheels on from the R32 and the S2k and then started undoing anything that needed it (forgot the ATTESSA initially, oops!) then it was time to drop the subframe...

Easy does it;

And we're free, certainly doesnt look as clean as the replacement!

After this point I started to strip the old subframe and realised I should've taken off the driveshafts but a quick trip for a 14mm ring spanner I didn't mind breaking and they were off soon enough. Diff was off and it was time to get these bushes out, very easily done compared to the subframe & rear diff bushes. Got them out with a threaded rod and a 24mm socket and then hammered in the frozen new bushes (or should that be fitting now).

Image

Started to build up the new subframe at this point and decided to drop it in with just diff fitted and no arms.

Rear diff bushes and new DW Hicas bracket;

And in she goes;

Got both sides put back together now but no pics unfortunately, left discs off for now as I need to adjust the handbrake for the MOT (which runs out tomorrow - on my birthday of all days!)

Then need to move to the front and swap the Teins for the Meister-R's and fit my new upper camber arms then it's off to get MOT'd then somewhere to get the Alignment done. When all of that is done it's time to sort out my silenced decat (weld in lambda boss) and then book in some track time :D

I'd reserve any impressed states for once it's back on the road and not falling apart :D

It's taken quite a while but have wanted to be 100% about everything I've been doing as obviously it's quite a large job to have taken on.

Edit:

Also, best tool ever = overalls & gloves! Don't know how i've gone without for so long.

Good effort and you deserve a pat on the back/beer for taking a job on like that and doing it properly too. Nice back up car too ;) I do love S2k's

Cheers Stuart :) Also treated a few areas of the car to a bit of underseal - haven't actually done that much but just did the areas I wouldn't be able to get to once subframe was back in.

That said I think I may have to drop it again not sure... Missed off the stock top cups from the subframe bushes and don't know if I need them or not (have asked on the GTR forum but they're not amazing with help for DIY people really)

S2000 is pretty awesome, had one a few years ago but sold it after it got keyed all over in the car park at my old work. Returns slightly lower mpg than my old 530D on my commute but the fuel cost pretty much balances it out :D (although on a long run the 530D was much better heh)
