What is the 'better' Impreza model to go for?
This sounds silly, but I'm not really after anything big bhp from a wagon (even 280 is pushing it too high) 230 - 250 would be plenty good enough.
I have to have my sensible hat on as its main role will just be a carriageway cruiser to cart my family around in.
I wouldn't turn down a WRX if it was the right price and was in decent condition, I can always make tarty adjustments as and when I need too. Like the gear lever gaiter, STI visual bits etc.

V3 too old?
Looks pants?
Good intentions maybe chaps but these are just opinions which usually equal poor advice.
Looks are subjective (thank God) so I wouldn't worry about that Dan, you need to make your own mind up as to what it looks like. As for a V3 'looking old' it's a newer model than the RA's that are gaining so many favourable comments and much newer than many cars that quiet rightly achieve worship status on here (Mk1 Golfs, Mk2 Escorts, 69 Camaro etc ec)
Do some detailed research on the websites linked in Ben's 'I want an Impreza' thread and then you will know first hand what bits come on which models. My Sti V2 wagon didn't have a lot of the bits people said it should have because some of the people chipping in were talking out of their arse, merely regurgitating info they had read on the net rather than knowing first hand
There is no reason why

You boys and the plastic gaiterBen wrote:Yep, don't rush fella ... honestly save the pennies and hold out for a proper imported wrx sti V4 or newer. The silver one looks pants chap and will have the tractor style gaiterand the horrid old interior.
The wrx sti is a much higher spec, has the 'red top' plus lots of other nice little extras.
Honestly, just wait, save and get the better car.

Red top manifold is the same as a wrx its just been painted red

Me personally would go for a wrx or sti, if its a clean car and been looked after then that would be the one
The later v3 onward vf turbo's are weaker than the td range apparently
If you don't plan to track it and stuff the how about a uk one
Longer gearing no fancy diff but cheaper insurance
Small one's are more juicy
Well done Trev

Well said stu
Its what you are happy with at the end of the day
I have owned a few imprezas v1 v3 v4 and wanted an ra and plumped for my v2 with horrid lightweight dash with no airbags etc..
Edited to add: don't buy an ra dan if its a daily and will be used for motorways/duel carriageways the 5th gear ratio will just piss you off

I personally was just giving an opinion that if I were buying a car to be relied on everyday then I would be buying a newer condition car than an older one. Sure bargains can be had for low prices but having got a 1993 year car I know how simple things are starting to go eg wiring and earth connections etc.
Interestingly how many of you guys are actually running your cars as reliable daily cars......
Plus again personally I would rather buy a car with the better spec car to start with rather than trying to upgrade afterwards (if that is the route Dan wanted to take). Have learnt that the hard way with mine
No worries though, obviously out of my depth with Scooby stuff and know when my opinion isnt counting for anything so will refrain from posting on the thread.
Still think a 1999 spec looks nicer though........
