Norfolk police and Modified cars

Post by Ben »

Interesting

http://www.norfolk.police.uk/safetyadvi ... hicle.aspx

Big bore and sports exhaust systems are usually fitted to increase the sound emitted and this contravenes the Type Approval of the vehicle, which is an offence. There is no requirement for police to measure the sound level from the exhaust system, it only requires an opinion that the system is not standard and that it is noisier than a normal vehicle of the same specification

noisier than a normal vehicle of the same specification? That makes no sense - how can it be the same spec if it's not modified?

I had this with Norfolk plod years ago with my old Toyota 4x4. I asked them to confirm what their dB limit was when pulled over and they couldn't quote a figure. At that point I told them that they didn't have a leg to stand on and walked out of their station.

I don't normally get into this kind of thing with the authorities but if someone tries to bullshit me, they had best know their facts.

The fact I have an Apexi GT Spec exhaust has fuck all to do with the noise it makes :)

Maybe if I said I replaced the cat with a silencer instead of straight pipe it would make them happy LOL.

Our car is totally road legal as the sierra was never 'type approved', with regards to their exhausts.
Everything on the car is recored with our insurance company, right down to the spare set of alloy wheels and the graphics on the car.
The car is even recorded as a 2 seater for the MOT.

Even though Alan can legally drive the car on his own car insurance he is also a named driver on the insurance policy and they are even aware that Alan is the competion driver.

For the amount of time and money that we waste on these cars then why not compromise. As NON of us on here EVER exploit the full power of our cars on the public highway fit an exhaust bung..........You would on track if it failed the drive by limit.

"Big bore and sports exhaust systems are usually fitted to increase the sound emitted and this contravenes the Type Approval of the vehicle, which is an offence."

That's a poorly written sentence, it implies that intent is part of this, in which case the intent is to increase the performance, the sound is merely a by-product.

On top of their inability to grasp English, I thought we in the UK never signed up to all that type approval nonsense for exhausts. EU Directive 92/97/EEC, as far as I'm aware only cats need type approval (103R).

However, despite been poorly expressed and rather high and mighty ("We only have to fink its noisy, you little scrotes") its fundamentally correct, the type approval of the car does prevent you making it louder.

Its a sad state of affairs that the glorious noises todays cars could make is strangled by a bunch of kill joys and the loudest noise made at 30mph most cars be they Ferraris, Jags or Priusisususis is tyre roar.

The world has become a candy whipped, pussy arsed version of itself :(
