I too would go for one with a rebuilt engine. The STi4 that Andy mentions was mine before him. It had a full, detailed service history but high mileage at 100K (or so, can't remember exactly) and it blew up 100 miles into ownership. I had it rebuilt and used it for a short while before selling it to Andy. It left a very bitter taste in my mouthAndy916 wrote:No, not all doom and gloom but the JDM cars do suffer those problems.
What is the 'better' Impreza model to go for?

I really liked my blobeye whilst I had it.Mr Fletcher wrote:Dan, not sure what your budget is but i had no problems with my 03 blob eye sti ,great car only really sold it as the box was ticked and just a foot note i sold it for 5k !
I only drove a blobeye wrx on a test drive and was a bit disapointed in it that's why I went for the Sti with the prodrive pack.

Well Dan just to add my bit.
When i wanted a scoob for me it had to be a wagon as well, I didn`t even look for a saloon! I couldn`t put my old black lab in the boot of a saloon!
I wanted a clean un-modified import. Mine was imported in 2005 and bought by me in early 2006. There is absolutly no rot what so ever under my car due to its little time spent on our salt riddled winter roads. I would also try to find as lower milage car as possible. Mine was imported at 70.000 kilometers then bought by me at 79. The first couple of years i owned ol`yella it was wragged consistently on trackdays with most of 2006 it didn`t spend more than two weeks off track and was double driven with harry. Now touching wood! Mine has never failed mechanicaly engine/box or otherwise (although it is running like a sack of shit at the mo!) Yes ive had burst hoses etc. these i except have been down to the fact that in recent years it has been parked up far too much. But then again look at marham last year. It spent two days being chucked around that autotest track by half of bigpower. The tyres were knackered, But i drove it home i one piece with a bloody great grin!
Yes people have spent bucket loads more on there cars, But ive had shit loads of fun in mine and it hasn`t put me out of pocket.
I expect some will tell me its all wrong? But for me the main thing has always been keep the oil clean. Ive only ever used 10-40semi. It cost just

Great advice Russ
The other thing is Dan, is that 220bhp in one of these is a bloody sight quicker than 220bhp in a Supra due to gearing and a relative lack of weight.
Just got to get your shit together now and buy one

Oh yes i nearly forgot! If you want to go doing autotests rather than full on track days? Stick with the standard TDO4 turbo rather than the TDO5 as these smaller turbos spool up quicker than the larger 05`s and is why the wrx wagon and uk cars are rated lower bhp wise. Out the blocks and away from the traffic lights these will launch hard all day long and not kill the box. You saw what kept happening with mine at the pod against Trev when i was still running a "baby" turbo, I could get the launch and to the 8th mile mark ahead then it would run out of puff and get caught and passed (although still ran 13`s.). Ideal for autotest though!
I miss my tdo4 and those good old days when it would just take the punishment all day long.

Buy one that floats your boat, then bank at least a grand so when it shit's itself, you don't have to sell it broken like I did. I got next to fuck all for mine when the head gasket went, as I could nt face 800 plus to fix it. It broke my heart as no car I ve ever driven gave me so much of a feel good buzz. If I d had the money set aside, it might still be with me now. Food for thought, stunning cars but they can bite.

[quote="Stuart"]Sounds like you have just described one of my dream cars mate........any pictures?
Annoyingly I was thinking how much I loved it after posting that and wondering if I had any pics of it. I've a feeling not as the digi camera I had at the time went in the bin when I moved recently and i can guarantee they were on that
I'm going to hunt though, and ask friends. Was a lovely car, really late 5 on a T plate, coilovers and phat bronze Rays hoopage... I want it back now I've been thinking about it. Sold it to a guy in Bristol about 3 months after a full engine build at Ralliart in colchester after I blew it up in a tear up with a 911 turbo on a track day - got past, then half a lap later it went bang, bit enbarrassing! Irritatingly the only reason i was using it was cos I'd blown the gearbox on the zed in the morning, expensive day
