GTR's (as in the old stuff, not the new one) are way cheaper and that's even if you're talking about a much higher spec than either of us owned ;) I know you're going to quote the amount you paid for your clutch (blah, blah, blah) but the actual service costs are on a different planet.

Fuck it, if you want to go leftfield and you're considering a Shamal/Ghibli, why not go for an Alfa SZ and really push the boat out..............

Or better idea still, mug that idea right off and buy 17k's worth of durable American investment as linked to in my ad on eBay

Signing off (with far too much time on my hands)

General Servicing maybe, but this is a weekend toy wheras the gtr needs money chucked at it seemingly constantly as it's only driven hard on track.

Alfa SZ is something I hadn't considered but always loved, just been searching them....:coolgleamA: proper slow though..

The american stuff i do really like but I'm not feeling it for this purpose. I think it's because if I do it I want something that I drooled over as a kid, and I wasn't really into american cars then. But it does open me up to anything from a 300SL, through the Pork Turb 930, 348s, 355s, Shamal, now SZ.... the list goes on and I'm still not settling on anything.

Hand on heart, the SL is probably the cheapest to own in terms of running costs and residuals by a mile. Anything else on your list will be stacks more to look after (residuals will be tied to regular maintenance whether it's used regularly or not)

The thing that would put me off SZ's, Shamals etc is that he resale market is so low. At least with the German stuff the demand is high and pretty consistent.

Keep surfing  (I'm feeling a nice Cal look retro Beetle at the moment :D )

My Dad sold this recently. I grew up with this car and totally understand the love for the 930 turbo

Unfortunately the maintenance wasn't kept up over the last ten years or so, so it needed PLENTY of work.

Keep to your original idea and get a 930 turbo! :)

Interesting Tommy, can he get any more??

So I went to see a 930 today. 1980 in grand prix white whith black leather. full respray and re trim so pretty minty, also a big stack of history with it. Didn't drive it but going to go back and have a go. Mixed impressions, I thought as soon as I looked at one I'd want to buy it but for the first time in my life, perhaps because I'm buying it for a reason rather than as a toy, my head was ruling my heart rather than vice versa. Liked the car a lot but need to see a few more, there's another one coming out of the paint shop from a full bare metal job at the end of the week, silver with blue interior (would rather black inside but do like silver outside) so will go and see that one too. Saying that, I really want Guards Red and Black but realise with these you need to buy on condition/history rather than fave colour.

Saying that, I got home and started checking out the SLs again so going to see a few of them too, they have a strong, and also strange, appeal. There's an F plate thats been in dry store for 12 years, only done 50k and full history, all MOTs etc which looks good, although he wants strong money for it....

so basically I'm no closer... and the geezer in Sweden who is selling 2 Shamals keeps sending me more pics..... aaagggghhhhhhh

Road trip  :smash:

You've done well to suppress your normal instinct of impulsively buying cars mate; I had kind of expected a half drunken text explaining why you'd bought a rare caramel coloured 930 with tiger stripe interior :D

Look forward to your views once you've driven one.

Ok, this stupid idea seems to have become more and more stupid. I've managed to talk myself out of a Shamal having spoken to two auto electricians for whom I have the utmost respect. One of which, who I've known for 20 yrs and as en ex aerospace engineer I honestly think can do anything electricalwith a car literally said to me "well if you get one of those, don't expect me to work on it for you!"

So the plan has escalated (in price) towards 993 turbos and I saw 3 today. I have to say that despite loving these cars I'm finding it hard to take the plunge as learning more by the day. Saw 3 today and am currently torn between a stock (bar suspension and S spoilers) arena red/black car and a silver/blue(urrghh) car with hight flow cats, hybrid tubs, ttf remap, suspension and S spoilers.

However, it would appear that these things are pretty unreliable, most cars have had either top end or full engine builds starting from arounf 40k miles, which rather puts the lie to porsche build quality!!? The red car had a

Not an out and out sports car, but perhaps tail happy enough with good reliability?

No slating from me, they're awesome. But idea of this car is something old(er) that I've always liked but won't lose shed loads of money/maybe will appreciate. The problem is that I like/d a lot of cars and who the fuck know what's gonna happen to prices.

My mention of the stock 993tts feeling slow was more over my stock/modded dilemma - i love modded cars but from what I read/hear no everyone shares my enthusiam when it comes to old porks so it makes them even harder to shift.
