Snetterton track night 30th August (report)

Post by Stuart »

Not too many photos due to the terrible weather, being Mike's gopher and generally busy from 2.30pm until about 8pm! As many of you have been to Snetterton before though, I am sure that you'll forgive me :)

Mike called at about 2pm to confirm that he was there but also to confirm that the weather was officially crap. As I only live a few miles from the circuit I had watched the weather go from glorious sunshine to howling winds and rain on and off a few times, all morning. Awesome conditions to try out an untested car!

I rolled up to find him tucked away in one of the garages with the shutters down, trying to keep warm and dry; he's not daft, I'll give him that :) We both got the Golf properly dry after its brief run off of the trailer and its sodden trip over from Suffolk. It gave me a proper chance to have a nose around it, taking in the details and quality that photos never seem to capture. It really is impressive for a home built car. With the car dried off, Mike thought he should try and fire it up before heading out for noise testing.

Action shot :)

The weather got worse again around 4pm and as we'd already consumed a Snett Pasty (8/10) and coffee (4/10) I decided to leave Mike to it for a while whilst I attended to some errands in town and collected the good lady. I arranged to get trackside by about 6pm, allowing adequate time for chip sarnies and a cuppa tea.

By the time that I got back Mike had christened the car and was quietly pleased that things were generally pointing in the right direction. It was quite greasy on circuit and he was still running R888's, untested brakes, suspension, engine etc etc. He was cautious in his observations of the car and also how he felt driving it after a lengthy lay off. With a huge disparity in driving experience and car types present, the tricky conditions were not helped by having people there as diverse as novices and Caterham academy stars of the future, through to Vauxhall Tigra's and fully prepped mk2 missiles :D

As the evening wore on it was plain to see that Mike and the car were getting into a groove. He was, or certainly seemed to be, gradually getting faster through the corners and later on the brakes as lap by lap he would reel in supposedly faster cars. 170bhp in a sub 900kg car is pretty damned useful, and especially when it is peddled by the Essex mafia on semi-slicks :D

Aside from Mike, I saw a few other faces from yesteryear! Cannit (Paul) was there in his Megane 250, Mad Dad (Andy) was there in his gorgeous 996 turbo and I even caught up with Safety James too :) Catching up with a few of the other staff at Snett, it was nice to be back but watching is still shit and doesn't compare favourably to getting out there and getting stuck in. I was delighted to have been there to see Mike test the Golf and I think that they both came out of it with flying colours, so it was well worthwhile and it was great to be of some support to Mike (I think I was more of a hindrance but he was too polite to say)

With Mike's Golf loaded back onto the trailer, and us going our separate ways I got into the Vito and reflected on the afternoon and evening.

Did I miss the driving? Well, yes, but only if I was driving something that didn't fall apart and it would still have to thrill. A lot of caveats there then.
Where does the majority of the fun come from? Being comparable in speed to your mates I think. There will always be someone faster on a trackday, but if you are reasonably close to your mates that is all you need Just how much would I need to spend to be competitive with the likes of Mike? More than I want to, so that killed that stone dead :D

Mike and the Golf were genuinely quick at Snetterton. With set up time, seat time and a track like Cadwell........I really believe that he will take some catching around there.

So there we are. An enjoyable time with Mike and his trusty Golf. It was nice to catch up with Paul, Andy and James too. Roll on Cadwell

I do appologise for the lack of report on the trackday but here goes.

I wonted to do a trackday evening as i didn't wont to waste the money on a full day if the car failed in the first few laps. so i found this trackday through javelin but the date was while i was on holiday at my caravan for a week in suffolk so had to slip into a conversation that i was going out for the day on the thursday and that we would be taking the car and trailer on holiday with us but all was met with thats fine.

So saturday loaded up the car filled the truck with wheels tyres fuel and spares and left enough room for holiday stuff.

once we got down to the caravan dropped di off at the van unloaded the holiday stuff and then took the car and trailer off to the barn on site to store the car till thursday. Once i got back to the van i was meet by the words where your crash helmet and gloves, in all the packing for holiday id lefted them on the bed.

so a trip to sca race and rally in norwich on the wednesday and

Sounds a bit "exciting" Mike!
I think you'll go a long way to beat the Golfs, and the ways yours has been put together, it must be very satisfying chasing down the perceived faster cars.

Nice write up Mike :) That must have taken some genuine effort for you, as I know you hate typing stuff up

The thing with Mike's car Rob, is that it looks mint so immediately people expect something a bit special. Then when they hear it, especially in its new spec, the know it's going to be quicker than standard and far quicker than any twenty year old Golf has any right to be. I think many trackday drivers expect any tweaked MK2 to be turbocharged, so when they see the engine and see it's NA and just blessed with a big set of carbs many of the people look impressed with the finish, but not sure about what to expect performance wise. Only in the UK......... :) If this car was found in Europe, say France, Belgium or Germany, then people would be going batshit over it :D

Once on track, the car started to look visibly quicker as Mike was building confidence and the tyres were warming up properly. The exhaust note is quite unlike anything I have heard from an ABF; it really howls with a hard edged tone that is much, ,much more aggressive than most Golfs I've driven, followed or seen (You really have to see it and hear it to get what I mean). It's no secret that I rate Mike's ability to drive and having mopped up most of the prizes in his class for sprinting over the years, his results back that up. Mike's ability to tease the best out of the car combined with an awesome spec'ed Golf means that around a circuit like Cadwell or Brands Indy, I reckon you would need something properly quick to get around him and certainly way more focused (i.e. Caterham or ex-race hot hatch) or way more powerful.....but even then, Mike scalped the R33 and several others that had loads more horsepower/power to weight so I guess the driver skill and commitment will play to his advantage there too.

If there is ever the chance that Mike and Trev both descended upon a trackday together at somewhere like Cadwell, then I would happily drive there, pitch up and watch two of my favourite Golfs battle it out all day. Add into the mix that Trev and Mike have been mates for years and it sounds like a great excursion
