
VW Golf MKII 16v 3 door
Time for a little update.....
The poor little golf has barely turned a wheel in the last six weeks. So I decided that as the audi was going into the main dealers on friday for a new clutch, I would set aside the whole day to do the jobs that needed doing on her and go have a play over the weekend as the forecast was looking real good.
With the audi dropped off and courtesy car picked up (more on that in a bit...) The time had come to get stuck in and sort out the horrible grumbling from suspected alternator and do the gear linkage......
Turned out the alternator was fine. The horrible noise was comming from the water pump! So ok i thought! This would be a great time to do the cambelt and aux belts as well. Within the hour my motor factors had the parts i required on my doorstep albeit minus the powersteering belt.
What can i say other than "what a twat of a job!!!" After spending far too long trying to remove the bottom pulley (why the f$%k is there no way of locking off the crank?) I know clio`s are my thing, But shit a simple 8mm drill bit through the hole in the flywheel and in a clio the crank is locked! I do apreciate that the golf is and old gal now and might well have had several bolts changed over the years. But why are so many different sized bolts used throughout? My upper cambelt cover for example has one 10mm, one 8mm and a allen bolt. This set the tone for the whole day! Its been a long time since ive lost my wragg quite so much with a car.
The real insult was i thought this would be a simple job (only three spanners in the haynes manual!:D) Just two days before i had removed two engine/boxs and replaced one back into a clio all well within a day. I can only say sorry for the lack of photos, I was far too hot, Bothered and generaly wound up to even think about taking any.
And i didn`t even get round to doing the gear linkage as the rest had taken so long. But she does sound so much better now. I will do the linkage... err...soon.
Still i did get this to potter around in for the weekend.


One brand new 12plate A6 tdi S-line with all the toys fitted. My car was due to be finnished friday afternoon. Imagine how upset i was when audi phonned me to tell me that my car required a new gearbox oil seal and they would have to order it in. So i would have to keep the S-line until possibly wednesday.

Sorry guys! I didn`t bother taking any photos as there was nothing much to see. I had planned on giving the old gal a good wash and clean around the engine bay once i had fitted the linkage, But as i said it didn`t quite go to plan so its still dirty (hasn`t been washed since les done it at the end of march!):blush5:
I am planning on doing the linkage this weekend and if it goes easier than the pump i will give the engine a good dressing and get some pictures up.
I agree the 1.8T is a great lump, but i will keep the 16v lump as ive still the scoob for turbo nutter giggles;). The scoob has done more miles in the last few weeks than the golf.

Don't get me wrong Russ, in something as light as a MK2 for a daily driver (you get the gist), the 16v lump is brilliant in an old skool way. My small bumper one used to get to a certain point in the rev range and it would feel like it picked its skirts up and ran!
The two sides to it's nature made it more interesting, even if a little gutless at lower revs.

I had never planned on modifying this golf just bring it up to scratch, polish it and be a big gayer with it and do some shows and enjoy the stock-ness!:D So far ive done none of the above!

I've had two Sciroccos, five Golfs and now a Seat. I've had three Audi's too, so I'm no stranger to the VAG brand. I do love my old Fords, but I'd have another Mk2 or maybe 3 Golf in a flash, as I would an E34/6 BMW.
I don't blame you for not want to dick about with it, you've already got the yellow Missile to muck about with.

Russ, knowing what I've learned in the last 6 months - I'd have kept it and 'uprated' it to 1.8T .. do it fella
- the MK2 is an awesome design ... but ... imagine it with some modernisation .. it will be an amazing car, and from what i've read, it's not a difficult job to change the motor.

russ there is a excellent little up grade you can do to the engine to make it alot better top end and more responsive.
Its called the Wur device which is situated just above the gearbox housing and bolted to the head with the two braided hoses going to it.
What this does is it keeps the pressure constant to the mettering head and the main thing is keeps the fuel richer as you go through the rev range the standard one weakens off so loosing horse power.
I used a guy called ken mills injection which was recomended by some guys who race golfs when i was at marham excellent service quick turn around. I think he charged me about
