Young driver car options
I remember a number of years ago a chap bought his son a brand new Escort cossie - kiddy was 18 ... insurance was 44k !! .. lol.
Basically I'd search Autotrader for cars in the ins group 1 and 2 - they also normally have next to nothing with regards tax on them as the emissions are low.
Insurance group 1 - tax B

Pug 306 TD.....I had one (1996 3dr) for many years as a daily driver/cheap runabout, it was also the first car that my wife drove when she passed her test.
It was a group 4 (not sure how the latest insurance tariffs work). It was cheap to insure, cheap to maintain, cheap to run (50mpg+). We sold it a couple of years ago to a work colleague with nearly 200k on the clock. Despite it's faded white paint and a few dents and scratches, it's still going strong
