We don't have a towng eye on the front of our car, only a towing strap and as such it has to be side strapped. Will this cause a problem?

Nope, no problem at all. It's only front wheel drive stuff that needs strapping down at the front to be honest... even Gary's Evo just has two side straps to keep it central, then two on the rear suspension to hold it in the rollers, plus two more to hold it back.
