The fight of their lives (Benn vs McClellan)

Post by Stuart »

Did any of you guys watch this TV show?

I was there that night, watching amongst the 12000, and I remember the atmosphere oh so clearly. I was a 23 year old confident lad, absolutely shit scared by the intimidation in the air that you could cut with the metaphoric knife.

The video above captures a fascinating back story to one of the best fights with some truly awful consequences. 'Enjoy' probably isn't the right word but I found it compelling all the same.

Fascinating insight into the events and the aftermath.

Nobody really won that night.

I only managed to see the last 5 minutes of that but theres another documentry about the fights between Ali and Frazier which made good viewing and i think the name of the programme was "thriller in Manila" . Frazier only had sight in one eye and only he and his manager knew that , its amazing how he even got in to a ring to fight with one eye let alone become world champ and to fight in one of the greatest fights of alltime with Ali . I remember watching the fight that night you could sense the atmosphere just watching on TV......It was a complelling story and as Rob said no one really won......

On the same note there was the Ewbank / Watson fight with tragic result all in the same era....

The boxing back in that time was facinating to watch there were some fantastic boxers and some real grievances between them too...they were proper grudge matches back then...

I've never seen that show, but do have the full fight on DVD which I often watch. Never ceases to amaze me the courage of Benn to pick himself up and win (albeit with tragic consequences).
