Tired of the snap crackle pop spec radio in mine, with the wand to control where the sound comes out, I've begun getting replacement components together, including speakers, cables and head unit.
I guessed the want would complicate things somewhat, but did nt plan for what I found.
The speaker wires from the original head unit are push fit, with a pair of cables for the left, and a pair for the right (Literally 1 pair, a + and - ). They run down to the spatialiser or wand, and this then has 6 (= and -) the run into the main loom attached to the bulkhead

So the only way round it I can see, is to remove the door cards, interior "wall" trim, lower dash etc and run completely new cables.
Just to add to the fun, the existing head unit has four power inputs, an earth, two ignitions and a constant It's not even an amplified unit, so I'm very confused indeed.
Shit like this makes you want to throw the towel in a get a "proper" car.

All the trim out, door cards off, new cables run and fed through existing cable routes and grommets.
Far more fiddly than it should have been, but they now lay in wait for the Pioneer Mosfet head unit. I've left the old wires and "spatialiser" (nicknamed the shit stick) in place for when some sadist who is deaf as a post wants the original unit back in place.
Still slightly confused why the head unit would nt power up first time round, but should nt be too long to suss out.
Still pondering outing the old girl, but if I spend a little time and money, she'll go better, handle better, and sound better. And for what I'd get for it, I could get a bus to work for a month and a take away!!

Come on Rob!! Positive thinking! You have a rock solid car with cheap as chips running costs and retro cool looks.
You dont have service lights and electronic this and electronic that to worry about. If it breaks YOU can fix it not rely on a dealership to read the "pooter" and tell you how much they are going to fleese you to fix it!
Stick with it mate!

You're doing a grand job there Rob . Slowly but surely working your way through all her little niggles, by next summer you'll find yourself taking the family out for pointless drives every chance you get and you'll know you made the right decision to keep her:D

All in, and thanks to Dave the mystery of the extra powered leads at the back has been solved (Previous bodgery and the wand of doom being powered)
It works well enough, just need to spend a little time setting the balance and tone, things have moved on a little bit apparently, there's controls for everything!!
It even allows about 30 odd display colours to be chosen, I've currently got a nice discreet dark green to match the factory display, but worth considering if you've got a bright blue (VW) or red (Audi) display to think of.
Need to put the door cards back in, but pleased this little jobs done as I'm in the car to and from work for an hour way at the moment.

Stunning car that Trev. Can you imagine opening your garage up and starting that thing up? Looks to be good value too.
