It's been a while.....

As the title suggests, it has been a while. Great to see old names still here doing the honours, and i hope to be a regular once more now that things are improving on all fronts.

Love the changes to the site, it looks new and fresh and seems to work quickly and smoothly. Very nice

I've retired my scoob after 6 excellent years. I'm going be stripping him down to the shell, making extensive changes, and prepping it for a more defined role in life. I'm just in the process of acquiring a trailer so i can transport the old bugger around.

A few weeks ago i purchased something i've been after for a very long time in order to facilitate certain changes in my life. Stuart told me some time back they were a great vehicle and now i've used one in anger i have to agree.

I bought a Toyota Hilux Surf. It's a 1996 model SSRG in Blue over Silver. It's a 3Ltr diesel automatic with winter pack (twin batteries, rear passenger heating) and towbar with twin electrics. Suffice to say i love it!! It's already taken me to the south of Spain to see my mum, and a trip to Scotland with the dogs to see the outlaws, all without missing a beat. It's very sedate and quiet at 75mph, and will return over 400miles to a tank. Very useful range.

It will take over half a ton in the back and tow 2500Kgs, perfect for humping track car, tools, spares, and wheels around. What a cracking bit of kit it is and with a boot big enough for me and the dogs. Very handy if i piss Hazel off!! Everyone that's seen it so far comments that it looks cool and what a handsome beast it is. I won't dissagree there and have named it....The Beast

Anyhow, when i eventually get started with the scoob i'll start a thread detailing the stripdown and build. It's going to take a good while but it should be interesting as i've got some unusual/different ideas about how it's all going to run. I have my own ideas when it comes to building and tuning which doesn't always follow mainstream thinking. It will be fun proving my theories, and you can tell me what you think in due course.

Glad you like the Surf

We've had a couple now and I think they are great allrounders. Impressed with the range......the 3 litre is obviously better on a run than I expected!

I look forward to seeing the project Impreza as and when

Twin turbos?!!

Does that mean a Legacy engine arranegment or are you going for an RB26?

Only jesting, I look forward to reading your progress when this gets off the ground (by the sounds of it, it has already>)

The 3.0 Surf is a cracking truck, the father in law has had one for 4 years and it's never missed a beat.
The twin tubby scoob sounds REALLY interesting, keep us posted.

Even Subaru can't get the Legacy's sequential turbos working seamlessly and they've been at it forever so not going that route.

I think Nissan got it right by having twin turbos in parallel. That way running two smaller turbos at lower boost pressure you can make same power output as a bigger single turbo and with much less boost.

Advantages for me being reliability, bugger all lag, faster spoolup from lower down, and the opportunity to make peak torque from much lower down the rev range. Perfect for a track car that's not going to see any 1/4 mile action.

If i were doing 1/4 miles only a big laggy turbo would be fine because peak bhp is important than torque and everything happens at the top end of the rev range.

A hybrid TD04 is capable of making 300bhp+ and 320-330ftlb torque at 16-17psi, and will spool up rapidly from nothing. Two of those on a 2.71ltr lump and you easily have 600+bhp and 600+ftlb available from very low down.

You were more or less spot on when you said RB26.

I will do buddy, no worries. Once i've had my Op and recovery time i can pick up where i left off. Nice to see you've upped the ante with new premises and equipmenmt. Looks bloody awesome.
