Santa pod 10/4/11

Post by pablo »

Saturday morning and i was out washing and polishing the the car at 07.00 before the day got too hot. Once Alan arrived at 08.30 he made a start on cleaning the engine before we sat down to watch the qualifing. Afte it was over we headed out to fill the car with petrol and whilst we were out we popped in to see John Ashley (Ashley competition Exhausts).

Alan had wanted to practise his launches as he was a little worried about launching this car with this clutch. Alas this was not possible. So once back at mine we continued the big clean of the car, including touching up the paint on the inside.

The other concern we had was that since changing the turbo the control pipe that plumbed into the turbo was now plumbed into the inlet manifold due to a diffent turbo housing. This was causing the turbo to overboost and the boost controller to kick in and switch to 'get you home' mode. Gordon had said he would come to the pod to give us a had if needed.

Sunday

I set off from mine at 06.00 to meet up with Maverick & Iceman (Alan & Wayne) the next junction down the motorway. As the motorway was empty we convoyed in line across all 3 lanes for about half mile. (I so want of pic of us in that formation).

We arrived at the pod with very little traffic. I set to polishing the car again, under Waynes supervision, and Alan went to sign on. Once back Alan decided to go out early, so off he went.

Run 1.
Bogged down off the lights and overboosted all the way down the strip. meaning that Alan had to press a button to reset the controller every gear change......Not happy.

Run 2.
Alan decided to try it from flat...not a good idea....and still over boosting.

By now Bart's toy's were well and truely out the pram, so i suggested he ring Gordon who was somewhere around. He reply was that I should do it, or words to that effect...So i rang Gordon and he said he come over. At this point Wayne following on from something Bart had said about the boost contoller pipe, layed it out in another route almost reducing the length by a third. Gordon turned up and said that it might help but that he would look at the boost controller and re set it. Basically he dropped the peak boost right down to prevent it over boosting. We had gone from 21psi to 14psi.

Run 3.
Better launch, no overboosting and his quickest time for the day, all added to make one happier Bart.

Run 4.
A repeat of Run 3.

Did we have problems...........yes
Did we achieve our times.......no
Was it a good day................yes

We also had a little surprise when Neil (fastford editor) came over to do a miny feature.

Alan has taken some pics and will get them as soon as he can.

As long as you had fun it was a good day

Thought I might get up there but I'm running next weekend and ended up doing a photo shoot instead

Driving a fast Jap import is like coming out of the closet, you might surprise some people, but in the end you are still gay.

Paul/Alan,
The most important things is that you enjoyed the day, and that at least you got to have some fun, that's you work your spuds off all the time. It's great you've got a bench mark now, and once you've got some issues sorted, you'll be well away.
Shame i could nt be in two places at once, as I've had been there cheering you on.
Well done guys!

Waste gate sounds lovely, I still love that noise now as much as I did in the 80's when the tuners first started with them :)

Just noticed that on your 3rd run you only changed gear to the shift light in 3rd gear. Think we might need a bigger shift light.
