Complicated no doubt by the fact that the parts are largely interchangeable and also that the VW massive are very good at successfully experimenting with engine swaps.

This Golf is only my third one but I think they are cracking cars and they represent bloody good all rounders.

for front wheel drive there great fun and spend a lot of there time on 3 wheels, parts are so cheap its untrue / plentyfull amounts, and as stu says most parts are interchangable , if i had the money i would be very tempted by a golf rallye mk2 wide arch 4 wheel drive and a g60 charged engine as standard , just a shame there all lhd

I did see a 4wd version for sale but it looked a modern version. Plenty Cat Ds too

Must admit, the way it stands I'll probably be in a Mk4 Turbo next year, but it does largely depend on the price of jungle juice!

i knew a chap who used to have one of these in red...lovely looking car...cant beleive he pulled the orignal engine out and slung in a 1.8t lump:eek:, there must be laws again doing things like that:headhack:

an n/a mk4 is a big no no imo , unless its a family loafer i guess
mk4's are heavy beasts im comparison to earlier models.

hmmm forgot about the r32 thats a mk4 but has a 6pot 3.2 and 4wd

I would love an R32. A guy I knew had one from new and the thing gripped, sounded and performed like something far more exotic than a humble Golf. Sure they costed a fair amount but the build quality was stunning. Equip one of these with a Milltek exhaust and prepare to be amazed :)

@ Gerry,
I need at least a Mk 3 for the interior space, and there are very few decent 16v's out there. I'd need a VR6 for pace, but this brings handling and running cost issues. A Mk 4 is an obvious progression, but as Trev says, they are fat knackers compared with the older models, and you'd need either a 6 pot or a turbo to get it going.
Don't get me wrong, if I can get sensible power figures from mine, and it's still behaving I'll keep n/a, but if not, a mildly uprated Mk4 will do quite nicely.
