Superchips...

Post by Safety_James »

I just wanted to ask peoples opinions/views of this product..

I have been offered the chance to have my Integra super-chipped for a very small fee, and by small i mean small.

I have left it as 'ill get back to you' as I'm not sure if its something worth doing on a 1.8 N/A car for a 5 - 10 bhp gain?

Anyone had any experience on using them, even in a Vtec? Any pro's / Con's for having this done.

I can safely say its not something i would chose to do at the normal price, but this offer seems reasonable so wanted opinions, plus i think i may be right in thinking it may be difficult to do on my car without a piggy back system (not clued up on that either) ??

Or not bother and go for a decent Hondata ECU?

Let the comments commence..

Whatever you do budget for a dyno session afterwards (or even better before and after), youve got no way of knowing whats happened to the fueling... and if you dont check it your wallet may suffer.

And Butt dynos are not that accurate. :)

i have a superchip on my sierra GT wheni fitted it i felt better throtal response but seemed to slow down as when i went up the revs so i fitted my FSE power boost valve and together they worked great pulled all the way through the revs withe no let up.
i had to fit the FSE as my car MFI

upside was more power im not sure how much but i was just under a second quicker down the 1/4mile. crusing i got a couple more MPG but the down side was when i kained it it used more fuel than before.

hope this helps mate

I wouldnt bother mate. If you want a better increase go for the Spoon Sports ecu which lowers the VTEC point I believe and gives you a bit more hp through the rev range. Ask Alexb who has one in his EK9 Civic Type R.

Failing that I would save your money and just go for the Hondata and get it mapped properly.

Just my 2p.

If you are going to leave this alone James I think you've made the right decision. They are fine in the most basic road applications but in a tuned car, and a type R has to be considered as that, they would be about much use a hog roast at a bar mitzvah.

Buy well, buy once. Buy crap and spends hundreds fixing it :)

nt worth it for your car really james, like you said 5-10bhp gain isnt worth it(price depending)

also your decision should depend on what else you want to do to the engine, if you will look at cams etc..for the future then is no real point in the superchip

superchips are great for turbo charged cars(petty or diseasel) n/a cars arent really worth it

theres my two pence's worth :)

superchips have a bit of a strange system, what they do is design their piggy back chip for the first of a new model that comes out then have a tendency not to alter it for later incarnations of the same model of car,
ie early E36 328 they did a chip for and say it will do all 328's, even E46 328 which runs slightly different engine bits and exhaust so the gains they quote are often way out and some cars run like dogs when they've been chipped
best to stay away mate and save up for Hondata kit

save up some pennies and go for a Haltech piggy back system you can map yourself to control iginition and fuelling. Controlling the VTEC is another thing and would cost more money for a proper aftermarket ECU, again from Haltech but at least you could map it yourself.

Edited to add: Having just looked at the Hondata website their kits in the grand scheme of things aren't very expensive and look like really good quality equipment.
