Ipod controlling Head Units

Post by Rob S »

Gerry very kindly helped me out with an Ipod and I'd like to make even more use of it by having it in the car.
Does anyone have any experience with the sort of head units that charge and control them?
Any tips as to what to look for or avoid?
I'm currently heading Alpine's way as I understand they work really well together, there's several on eBay for less than

I got a fm transmitter from Duncan ages ago it works really well and charges the Ipod at the same time, but you can't control the ipod from the head unit.

I'm in a similar position (I think) Rob as the Evo doesn't have a radio and I'd like something with the aux. in socket for an ipod. I have an fm transmitter but don't use it because I found the quality to be poor plus, I believe them to be not strictly legal.

I'm not fussed about a cd slot as I end up forgetting to take any cds and listening to the same one ad nausea. I also don't have much idea about what's available.

Maybe I should take ebay pot luck and hope I get something that works.

I'll watch this thread with interest.

I have the alpine - it's great - basically the ipod lead runs out of the dash, you plug the ipod in and the screen of the stereo takes over the menu's. BUT make sure you buy a head unit that 'adds' the bass back to the output of the ipod.

I have an Alpine, it is one of the early ones that needed another box that plugs into the radio at the back. I have the lead to the ipod in the glove box. You can control it through the headunit and it works well.

Most units control them now, if you look in Halfrauds they have loads. Depends how much you want to spend mate :)

I use a Griffin iTrip usually but sometimes the radio doesn't receive the signal too well, will probably change head unit soon.

I have an Alpine that controls the ipod, i'm happy with it, it's better than the Kenwood i had before it. you had to be a rocket scientist to understand all the controls, either that or a spotty 17 year old in his Saxo lol
