Gearbox oil cooler

Post by Stuart »

Yo dudes :driving:

I'm drawing up a small list of jobs that need doing before next years season........actually that's bollocks, let me start again.

After the 19th of December (last drift/track event for a while) I'll be bored so I may as well do some stuff to the car. One of the really dull but practical, sensible jobs is fitting the oil cooler to the gearbox. Beyond knowing that this is a good idea, does anyone have any pointers for how this can be fitted?

Obviously I can draft in people like Dr Hayward and Sausage Fingers if need be, but as I'll be bored, I thought I'd have a dick around with it myself.

Advice, constructive or otherwise, greatly appreciated :iamwithstupid:

i would probably fit a temp sensor to gearbox and diff first to see if they need to be cooled :)

I reckon that's pretty much a foregone conclusion Mr Fletcher. Most of the Britcar BMW's use a gearbox or diff cooler. I know I'm not anything like Britcar level but sustained laps on the circuit or ragging around sideways (spinning more like) mean that the gearbox gets hot quite quickly and then the ambient temps mean it starts getting difficult to select gears, especially first.

Agreed ,but it still gives you reference on the actual cooling effect of your cooler set up;)

If you need to get a cooler set up, have a look at the 200sx S14 diff cooler. I'm sure it can be adapted pretty easily to suit the gearbox, it has a pump and cooler all bolted together. They are switched by temp and revs iirc, but I'm sure they can be altered to work however you need to.

Most people tend to dump them, I binned mine so they are worth feck all :)

They do feck all, as in they are never in the temp/revs range to turn on, even on track. When removed the pipes have a white powder shite in them :)

No problem, all I would suggest if using an S14 system is to give it a good flush. Evidence seems to suggest they never run, so although they will won't be worn out, it might be a bit seized :)

On another note, you could use a Stack temp gauge if the range is okay. They can switch relays when at a certain temp which can be used to start the cooler pump, plus you can see the temp itself and set flashing warnings etc :)
