Good idea Gerry, but i have one of the smaller 1.5W ones and it is as good as useless. A 12W may be a different story of course, but they only work properly when mounted externally and need loads of light.
I can get all this stuff so i will see what i can find to sort Ray's issue. The best thing of course if the car is stored in a garage with power is one of the intelligent trickle chargers for use on classic cars etc. My dad uses one on his Merc 190 and i does the job perfectly.

Easy way to decide what size you need is to see what current is being drawn from the battery while the car's standing as it's being left. Disconnect the positive terminal from the battery and connect a multimeter, set to amps, between both. Once you know the current draw, you can determine the wattage of charger you'll need x 3 to allow for short winter daylight.
Amps x 12Volts = Watts.
Amps x 12Volts = Watts.
Yes Gerry, another good idea.
The intelligent trickle chargers do all the work and just pulse in what is needed and when. This maintains the longevity of the battery rather than a constant trickle.

Just to butt in and sing the praises of a Trickle Charger (actually battery conditioner) I use one on both of my cars. As the Rush may stand still for a couple of months no roof so only dry weather car, and the R400 as it is competition/ track day only so may be left for a few weeks not running etc. Both cars have a Gell Battery fitted and it is reasuring that when you go to them that the battery is fully topped up, and you will get full cranking power. Mine are wired with terminals direct to battery with blade fuse, and quick release conecter. Very little power consumption, perhaps one off those small solar panels would do it.
