Measuring RPM

Post by Safety_James »

Right.. I need a bit of help with an ongoing issue at work and as you'll read my poor descripition you'll see i dont know much about this..

Obviously as you guys know we noise test everything before it goes on circuit by making you guys do 3/4 of your maximum RPM.

We occasionally have a problem with some cars, mainly bikes who dont have a rev gauge. So we are stuck with the problem of making sure they are doing the correct RPM

Now i know there are some machines that have wires that can be connected to certain parts of the car/bike in question (on the HT leads??) that can then tell us what rpm the engine is running at..

Where can i get one of these hand held machines from and what are they called?

What do you reccomend? We dont need anything flash or expensive, meerly to help our noise testing man along!

Thanks very much!!

Lots of automotive multi meters have RPM readouts on them:

You normaly bang in the number of cylinders and off you go.
