Don't forget the Evo's trick diffs too. That'll give a definite edge over the Impreza at that level.

Yup, you're both right. Economical repair back to what it was before, mid-300's, is what I'll do and take it from there...

Now, you say you enjoyed having a go in a 400bhp car, just think whats needed to make that reliable on an Impreza.....

Okay, over to the Evo, if you fancied another 4WD japbox and were thinking of changing.

Brembo's as standard, oil cooler, no intercooler, turbo etc change. just a full exhaust, re-map boost controller and your at mid 300's very safely, go for 400 and you need cams and maybe bigger injectors etc. NO messing with custom fit intercoolers, turbo swaps, custom oil cooler setup, the worry of the oil system etc...

I would also say having both the Evo is a MUCH better road car, I have done 18k since last March in mine as I enjoy driving it so much.
I wish I had seen sense sooner :)

Sorry to hear about your problem Andy :(

A 2ltr V7/V8 STi will pop straight in, change the cabin wiring loom/ECU for an import V7/V8 STi type so you can use the AVCS and lose the immobiliser, then you're away. Will be some modifying/head scratching of the loom to work your clocks etc but definately a good way to go.

Standard it will make 350bhp with decat exhaust + supporting bits and remap etc... Modify your injectors and chuck a bigger turbo on (TD05 20G) and you're easily at 400bhp+, and that's still with a MAF sensor, standard airbox and standard ECU that is very mappable. The engine won't even grumble at that.

Cost effective and reliable!!

Really fed up now. Waiting an age to get numbers/timescale from various 'names'. Enginetuner and Bob at BGV both good, but they're both 4K+ forged builds which is more than I can spend. Anyone got contacts/suggestions along the lines of dropping in a reliable s/h engine or short block to fit my heads to?

Talk to Andy at Grade A Subaru and he'll give you some options. He should have a s/h lump for sale and he'll stick it on a pallet and courier it to you.

Thanks for that. Don't get me wrong, I know all the good guys have a fair lead-time, but it's the difficulty in pinning 'em down to anything at all that I was unprepared for!

Helpful responses from Adgespeed in M'cr today, budget option would be a just-rebuilt STi4 block with my heads. Probably an extra grand for Mahle pistons/Manley rods rebuild of my block.

Ok, I think I've found a reliable guy to rebuild it in a reasonable timescale. Quandry is whether to leave std pistons and rods in there or go forged (both are forged in STi, but the builder reckons I'm towards their limit with 340bhp). Add oil cooler or say no more trackdays? Baffled sump, which I had already but not fitted, I'm hoping to have back from the fabricator in time.

That still leaves me with the potential for fuel surge, a turbo that's prone to compressor surge when wound up to 1.5bar, and the notorious v6 MAF. Fuel - maybe try something in-tank (think that's what the engine builder has on his rally car) as I think swirl-pot is one step too far on what's mostly a road car. Turbo and MAF can be replaced fairly cheaply with VF35 and Q45, plus remap, if I can find the enthusiasm at the end of all this...

What does:

"what's mostly a road car" actually mean?

And how does that relate to your use for the car? :)
