Important day for me today, loaded the car on the trailer and set off with my mate Stevie for a mock up of the engine at Jeff Bull to see what we could or couldn't get in

Image

When we arrived at Jeff's he had already got the big block on the engine lift with a TH400 bolted to it ready to try

We unloaded the car and put some foam over some of the vulnerable body parts to save scratching them when we tried to lift it in

Had another quick measure up

Then came the moment of truth, I needed it to fit width ways but also needed to keep it under the hood

Everything slotted in better than I had hoped, the engine fitted but we needed to make up the carb and filter to see if we had enough clearance

Looking at the finished result it became obvious that even with a standard deck we had run out of room, the engine is about two inches too tall

I still have the spare hood that came off the car originally so after talking to Jeff I decided to go for a tall deck to give better air flow and I will have to adapt the old hood with a scoop that will fit over the filter.

I had a look at some of the parts he had got in for me and had a look at other projects he had on the go.

The verdict was to go for around 581 cubic inch so there will be room for work on the block in future if needed. It needs to be streetable as well as turning it up on track days, it has to be durable as well as fast. All in all some good news and some bad, the engine fits but I will have to adapt the hood - could have been a lot worse.
I am in no rush to finish the engine so now we know where we are going with it I have told Jeff just to work on it as and when he gets time

Oh buddy, that is awesome. The hood not fitting properly is not the end of the World, certainly not when you have a spare. I am delighted to see that the car has taken another leap forwards towards completion.
581cu inches........that's over 9 litres mate!!

Went to Jeff's again yesterday, some parts have arrived block, pistons, crank, rods etc

Image

Image

Image

Most of the parts are custom for the application I want, the pistons have a lower top ring to allow the tolerances for the gas

Image

Image

Crank arrived and will be set up next week along with the block which will be bored out

Image

We have decided to change the spec slightly to allow a bit more grunt, Jeff will get the block bored out to 598ci (9800cc) which will allow more torque so I won't have to use as much gas. I am hoping to have the engine completed by the end of the month, while I was there I gave a hand fitting the engine back into a 1969 Camaro which will be racing at the Pod next weekend best run so far 8.6 seconds so I will be looking forward to watching it run next Saturday

You know, I sat here reading this and thought to myself, 'you know, the one thing this car will lack is torque!!' :)

No need for me to big this build up, my endorsement of the spec or the work involved is worth cock all in the scheme of things but it's nice to see the progress of the project.

I will add that is one of the funniest signatures I have read in a long while.
