Classic impreza offset problem/question

Post by Andy916 »

On my STi6 RA Lim I'm running newage Brembo disks with AP 4-pots on ally brackets of unknown origin plus a stack of 4 washers spacing the caliper outwards by about 4mm. The disk/caliper setup works well (on the road) and my 17" Rota PFF7 replicas clear the caliper.

With Mallory trackday coming up on Saturday, I tried fitting my 17" TE37 track wheels yesterday. Doh, I now need an extra 10mm clearance to fit these wheels (for checking purposes only, I tried a pair of 5mm spacers and the spokes just clear the caliper).

Option one would be to get a pair of 10mm spacers and longer studs, but am I likely to rub on the front arches with my 225/45-17 tyres? (ride height is lowish, about 30mm tyre top to arch) Also, I wonder if 20mm wider track at front and standard rear would handle oddly?

Option two would be to ditch the 4mm of washers and get a custom bell made up by someone like Compbrake, to run with say a 5mm spacer or no spacer at all. I'd prefer ally bells anyway, and I'm not too keen on the washers either, so this seems like the best longer term plan.

The easy option for Mallory on Saturday would be to run my Marangoni road tyres (on the PFF7s), but suspect this to be a bad idea!

Advice welcomed, TIA.

Have you been in touch with Godspeed? They might be able to do you a kit of some kind.

Aye, Ian Godney might be the man for this, if I can get hold of him!

Ian isn't usually difficult to get hold of.

Fitting longer wheel studs on Impreza hubs is a PITA, fronts aren't too bad but you need to press out the bearings to fit the rears.

The washers stack is probably there to centralise the caliper to the disc.

So, longer studs can be fitted fairly easily to the fronts then?

The washers align the caliper correctly for the Brembo disk, but I think the caliper bracket was originally designed for disk that sits a few mm further inboard, with no need for extra spacers. I have those 'other' disks (in a bad state, barely useable), they're a touch smaller at 315mm and I think they may have come from a 200SX.

Did you ever get rubbing at the front with your 225/45's and what offset was that, including the spacer?

Guess 10mm spacer is going to stress the bearings quite a bit more..?
