Insurance Repair question

Post by Evo »

Guys, as some of you might remember I had some fool crash into my BMW about 6 weeks ago. BMW have now nearly repaired the car which is being paid for by my insurance company as the lad wasn't insured.

I will no doubt in the future be selling the car and want to know if I need to declare that the car was in a crash, i.e. when they HPI the car will it appear as a CAT D??

Cheers

Cat D is one of the write off categories and that will show on a register whether it's HPi or anything else.

You should definitely declare it. If the work is done to a high enough standard and there is an adjustment in price (maybe a trader like Russ979 or blackskygtr could help) then you should sell it on easily enough Rob.

But if my insurance company have repaired it, then it will not be a 'CAT D'?

I would be more than happy to advise any buyers when I come to sell it that its been damaged have plenty of pics to show that the damage wasn't that bad, but I know when I've seen cars for sale in the past that say 'CAT D' I miss those ones out.

From memory, they did not write it off? If that's the case, then 'no' it's not a cat D (Excuse me, a simple error on my part) I would simply advise serious buyers that it has had a knock and show them the evidence in photos and let them make their minds up accordingly.

Cheers Stuart, thats what I wanted to hear,

No they never wrote it off, it was touch and go for a while, but in the end they repaired it. Should hopefully have it back by the end of the week and hopefully the weather will be good and ill bring it along to the next meet! :D

HPI will only show Write off's.
By the definition of that if the car has been repaired by the insurer the category of damage reverts to insurer repaired. This does not show on any search prospective buyers would perform on the car at the time of purchase.
You are under no legal obligation to mention the car has been repaired after an accident as in the eyes of the law the repair has been done to a level that is comparable or in excess of what the original manufacturer had undertaken when building the car.

If you are unsure give me a pm 4 weeks after receipt of the car and i will check it with DVLA and HPI to ensure it is "clear"

Just goes to show even HPI is not infallable.

Yes Jay, you are quite correct of course, you do not have to volunteer the fact that a car has been repaired although i believe that if you are asked whether the car has had accident damage you are obliged to tell. Of course some lie about this fact, but those that do and there are witnesses can be pulled up by the law.

Just thought i ought to mention that bit.
