Coilover recomendations?

Post by chrislandy »

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good supplier of coilover springs, currently I've got 6" 2.25ID springs but want to experiment a little without it costing the earth.

Also, for the technical suspension bods, at what point when increasing the spring rate should you change the bump:rebound ratio and at what point would you use a shorter spring with 2ndary "helper" springs

Thanks
Chris

Faulkner springs, generally they will let you buy some, try them and exchange them if you think you need a different rate.

ooh, thats good to know about faulkners, I might have to give them a ring later :)

I think a few phone calls are in order!

The reason I'm looking already at changing springs is because before the engine went pop it seemed a little rolley, although I have to admit I didn't have time to adjust the shocks or check the geo setup

You aren't going to find out which direction to go in with bump/rebound after changing the spring rates until you run it to be deadly honest.

If you end up at the top/bottom of the adjustment range its time to move that but it shouldn't really happen unless your dampers are bespoke or you've changed your rates by 500lb

You'll need helper springs if the main spring falls out of location with the shocker top at full droop. They are usually rated at 4 or 8lbs and become immediately coil bound when any load is put on them (sometimes even just the weight of the main spring!), so therefore they do not effect the overall spring rate.

When using helper springs don't forget to drop your shocker platform by the thickness of the compressed spring as you will put out your corner weights/ride heights.

I would try and avoid helper springs if at all possible.

Give John at Black Art Designs a call and tell him that Brad from TMV sent you.
He makes his own dampers and will produce them according to your corner weights, intended purpose, motion ratios etc and can do all this for you.
