What are the speeds underneath the times?
Seem very strange.

Dont think so fella, unless it was last night leaving the track?Daniel wrote:humm true, on second look the times really are bunched up. Well as you say it could be a dodgy gps signal :?
James was that you i saw at snetterton the other night? with a couple of other imprezas
Probably a few silver newages with rally slag graphics though i reckon!
James is looking for the next trackday...
God only knows what they are! It draws a perfect map of the track for you and tells you the speed around each corner and max speed on the straight but they dont seem to match those speeds so i dont know.duncan wrote:What are the speeds underneath the times?

Just compared some of my lap times to the laps on the video footage and they seem pretty much spot on so god knows!

Snetterton is obviously quite a quick track and you can make up so much time with quick entry speeds and careful exit into Sears on to the back straight.
My guess for such a big disparity in times is just that; it's an anomaly. I don't doubt that both of your cars are more than capable of the lap times and with a bit more practice/space/following wind, both of you could too as drivers. If you had got a bit closer with some of your lap times it could be down to anything but 3 seconds is a hell of a lot.
Experience tells me that different people learn at different speeds. Jon has done a fair few laps now and I suspect that the best thing he could now is to go back to basics and get a decent professional instructor like Maxx to spend at least an hour poring over your technique.
If two of you hired his services for the day (

Thanks Stu, Thats pretty much the point i was trying to make. I don't think kidding myself that i'm capable of such times is anything but counter productive and would breed over confidence.
I'll PM Maxx tonight and try to arrange his services for the day. If i can get the afternoon off i'll pay up and pop over on the 16th for a few pointers/pax laps

Jon,
we're nearly on the same wavelength!
I think you and the car are well capable of the mid twenties (even quicker) but the three second jump between times recorded shows me that the timing was out.
I remember one of the best pieces of advice I ever had about circuit driving came from young Frayz (where is he these days?) He had heard a quick tip from an old hand at the Nurburgring who told him that the simplest way of going faster and smoother (smooth=fast but we've already covered that) was to drive around the track one gear higher than you would expect that you'd need. Over time (more laps) you'll incrementally use more and more revs until you're actually using that gear properly. In simple terms, mid way through third gear is a lot quicker and smoother than the same thing in second gear.
Try it. You'll be amazed at the difference in half a day with the car feeling more balanced, less stressed and the times should tumble.
It certainly worked well for me when I tried it at Donny last year. I was not familiar with the track and posted consistent times in the first two sessions, then I remembered those pearls of wisdom and went slower in the third but quicker every session after that. I ended up 4 seconds a lap faster and that was with a car that 140bhp

Maxx is a great instructor but prepare yourself for him correcting your steering!! He did that at Cadwell without telling me and I could've torn his bloody head off

I second Frayz advice I tried it round the ring after he told us that and felt alot more in control and felt the laps were a lot smoother. :-D :-Dstuart wrote:Jon,

Sorry about that

Not sure I told you the story of the caterham driver at Brands Indy. I said as we aproached clearways "i'm just going to guide you round Clearways with the wheel", "ok" he says. So, as we approached Clearways I reached over and as I touched the wheel HE LET GO! eek so i ended up steering round Clearways one-handed, whats worse as it took me by surprise we were half sideways before I got my act together

Anyway, have heard from John and replied, hopefully we can sort something out over the coming weeks.
Just for reference and no secret, my daily fee for most UK circuits is
Have not used the iPhone app but use data-logging regularly. Even witrh the professional stuff you sometimes get an anomoly, i've done sub 1 minute laps of most UK circuit
and in fact got round Mallory yesterday is 2.4 sec (now I know it's a short track but thats shiftin!)
Also, having data-logged dozens of drivers it is pretty much unheard off to have a one-off quick lap 3 secs quicker than the rest, you may just hook up a really good one and be close to a second quicker so I think it probably was a glitch. It's also not uncommon for different drivers to get the same glitches at around the same time, seen it loads of times. GPS is effected by atmospheric conditions, the pro systems actually adjust themselves via over-the-air updates from specific weather stations. The DL1 I use also has uses it's accelerometers to partially overcome dodgy GPS info but can still throw up some oddities. As you can see speeds and line and such though it is obvious.
