Boost problem

Post by pablo »

The pipe from the air filter is slightly squashed....could this affect the amount of boost that the turbo would produce :?:

we had some suprising results with air filters/intake pipes on a rally car and would suggest you fit the largest set-up you can

Yes, as both gary and Alynn say, for the turbo to do it's job it needs to have sufficient volume of air on the inlet turbine side. If this is restricted by pipework or filter the turbo will be trying to suck the air in which will affect turbo spool up and boost a little.
Like Gary says, it is difficult to comment without seeing, but if this restriction was considerable, it may have even contributed to the longevity of the turbo.

I know it's not advisable to run this way but is it worth making 1 test run without any filter etc fitted?

Just to see if it makes any difference.

i was thinking the same as pablo but i have had another idea why it may not create boost

today i tested all 3 springs that we have for the wast gate, results

soft max 3psi
medium max 6 psi
hard max 8 psi

this is what the boost gauge was showing.

my thort on this is that the waste gate is to far from the manifold about 14"
now this is the first time of done a rebuild on a car so am i right in thinking that the waste gate
is to far away from the manifold to create any proper boost for the car.

diagram

origionaly the wastegate was bolted to the manifold itself and it was very hard to ajust it
when we wanted to up the boost.
the new one does not require to be ajusted its done by a T piece on the pipes to the waste gate.

Alan (Bart) has re fitted the original airbox to eliminate this as the cause.

The wastegate is not an issue being that far away IMHO mine on the skyline is some 20" away and i still make 1.5 bar with ease. one thing i would try is double up on the springs. they look lik factory figures for pressures to me
what are the ratings on the springs?

IE are you making lots less than the wastegate springs are rated for?

keep on it guys the answer is there somewhere.

Well the skyline is gone for good But how cool is my little replacement!!!!! 7lbs 12oz of pure joy....
