I have been playing around in photoshop recently where I have over exposed an image, then opened it again and underexposed and then dragged them over each other and rubbed out the area to expose the one beneath. Sounds similar to this.
Some really dramatic photos you can produce though !!!!!!
Take a pic with your camera that has the exposure spot on then use photoshop to under and over expose it. The more exposures you have the better the image will be.
