As Blacky said, it could be something else. Inspect the plugs and maybe do a compression test

ok so took it to clive atthowe today, first off lamda sensor is fooked (got a new one on order) then the trouble started, possible MAF so i'l get one of those sorted. if that don't cure it maybe an ECU fault.

cheers people :-)

nasty....how di he find out those faults???

I had similar faults on my Impreza come up on teh ECU only to find out it was a broken plug, so i would check the simple things before spending hundreds on MAF's and Lambda sensors

Did the O2 sensor fix it albeit briefly?

What tests did he do to determine it was the O2 sensor?

What makes him now think MAF? Did you try cleaning it ?

1. first off we checked the coil outputs, all sparking evenly and correct durations

2. checked the voltage wave output on the lambda and it was flatlining, went negative when the throttle was blipped, so was told that was knackered cos it should be a normal 'wave'.

3. then i asked to put it on the rollers to see if we could find the problem, ran it up (held boost made 270@ about 5000rpm) then mis-fired. when it came down to idle it was doing the 'running on 3' symptoms
plugged into the ECU and no faults were logged and everything seemed normal, so tried disconnecting the MAF- check engine light came on and the idle sorted itself out, plugged MAF back in and car continued to idle evenly.

as the ECU hasn't logged any problems it may have a fault but removing the MAF cured the problem and the check engine light came on so at least the ECU is reading MAF status.

i've ordered a genuine lambda sensor and picked up a 2nd hand MAF from a nice man on Bigpower lol

So the saga continues..................

New Lambda fitted, and 2nd hand MAF.

Car has had trouble idling once in the last week and still feels hesitant if i drive over 70mph, going back to Clives today for another look.

I guess the only other option is to buy a new MAF and maybe ECU by the way things are going :(
