On the subject of sensible.......

Comet have a clearance auction site for their returned/damaged/ex-display stuff. I bought a fridge freezer from there a few years ago. It had a small dent in the side panel but as it was going in the garage anyway, I thought the price was worth it.

When it comes to TVs it's a different story and some go for almost full retail and with delivery on top. I took a quick look this morning, just in case there was a bargain ready to be snatched but no. Instead a 500 quid Sony going for One Thousand Pounds :o WTF?

That looks a really nice TV for the money and price wise it seems to be roughly in your ball park.

At 40" you probably wouldn't notice the difference between that and a 42" screen, and i understand that upto 42" they reckon LCD TV's are pretty much on par with plasma screens. Anything bigger though and the recommendation is Plasma.

That one looks to be all singing and dancing too.

Are you going for it?? :D

Looking into LCDs further and on the Sony site FAQ I found the following:

Q: Tiny black or bright pixels appear on the screen.

A: If you have a few tiny black or bright pixels on the screen, this is within the performance expected for the new LCD manufacturing technology.

Q: Fast moving objects on my LCD television often appear to blur and the movement isn't clear.

A: Your TV is not defective. This can often be caused by limitations of the technology used by television broadcast companies or can be due to limitations of LCD technology.

So does this apply to plasma screens?

I wouldn't have said Plasma screens are affected due to the 100Hz refresh rates they use for displaying images, specially 720P or 1080P Plasma TV's having the best picture quality and least likely to ghost on very fast moving images.

In the next year or two there will be widescale manufacturing and release of TV screens made from LEP's (Light Emitting Polymers). If you think 1080P 100Hz Plasma screens look awesome wait till LEP screens hit the market. Not just extremely high contrast ratios but totally unaffected by fast moving images due to their ultrafast screen refresh rates and greater detail than current LCD technology so you can have a truly massive wall size screen without adverse imaging affects.
