Top recommendations Stu and Ben. Went shopping today, looked at LCD and Plasma, and persuaded Lucy that 42" would be better than 37" (fairly narrow living room, 8' viewing distance) :-D Spent the evening being amazed by everything we fed to it :-D Finished the evening off with some of the Fast and Furious on DVD

Has already got me thinking about Sky HD (bike racing in HD would be awesome) and Blu Ray ...

Bought at Richer Sounds as JL were out of stock. Shop price is 500 now, but they do it for the web price of 470 no problem.

Nope, it has 768 vertical lines. We're not massively into watching films, so performance on all sources is more important - standard Sky+, Sky HD when we get it (which is 720P I believe), standard DVD ... and Blu Ray eventually, but that will never be its main use.

Comparative viewing of the pictures in the Cambridge shops wasn't that useful, as they were feeding freeview to most sets and only the odd one being fed Blu Ray. Both shops very helpful, but Richer are tiny and crowded so less useful than JL. From varied reading and chatting to the sales guys it seems the chipset is as important as the native resolution, as the set will be some re-scaling for at least some of the time.

Pic looks much better at home being fed Sky than in the shop being fed freeview.

LG seem to undercut the others significantly, and manufacture 70% of all panels worldwide according to the Richer Sounds bloke. There was a 600 quid 1080P 42" LG Plasma in the shop playing Blu Ray which looked stunning, maybe that's the one you're considering? On a quieter day I'm sure they'd happily swap to different inputs for comparison.

Yeah Sky HD is 720 and even that looks amazing !!!

Not even sure if the Freesat stuff is 1080, if it is 1080i then I would stick with 720p because the progressive image will be better on fast paced stuff like footie or GP.

Its all cost also, if you are intending to buy Blurays its worth considering they can be quite a bit more than normal DVDs at the moment plus its argued that you cannot see a major difference on tvs less than 50inch between 720 and 1080.

You only really need 1080p if you are going to get a Bluray player or Xbox 360 or PS3. If you werent getting one of those then I wouldnt bother with getting a 1080p compliant tv.

Any 720 picture is going to be streets ahead of a normal tv picture !!

I have seen Bens Samsung and thought it was amazing the picture quality, the newer ones should be even better now.

Is this any good to you?? Panasonic Plasma HDTV, full 1080P (1920x1080) resolution from Comet. I thought it looked fantastic value for top branded 42" flatscreen.

I can't see a screen size for that let alone a price. Anyway, it wouldn't be on my list as it's only 5,000:1 contrast.

And does it really consume 1,500 watts?

May as well add my 2p's worth.
I've got an LG 42PC56 100hz plasma 1080 (not sure on i or p- Google seems to suggest it is an "i")
I use it for "normal" TV, DVD, Blu Ray and PS3.
The TV on normal feed is very good, with no drag or skipping seen on some cheaper panels.
DVD is good, markedly better than my old style tube TV.
Blu Ray and HD Games through the PS3 are gob smacking.
It's got freeview included, but have not used it yet.

Yes it does consume 1500W because the screen size is 103"
As for contrast ratio with a TV screen that big it's doubtful you'd want any more contrast. I bet the colours are plenty strong and bright enough as it is.
