Hmm, I thought that until I wrote-off a 300 quid Arai early on in my bike racing career. Spent the next few years racing in a 100 quid HJC (certified to the same standard, ACU Gold) and had a couple of scrapes on that too.
Use a helmet you're comfortable with and complies with whatever standard is required. The main reason that some helmets retail for 500+ is punters buying the 'best' they can afford.
Having said that, do avoid the VERY cheap Chinese-made unknown names currently on the market]just[/i] pass the tests, with scary stuff like strengthened areas that are specific to the exact test procedure...
I still wear an expensive Arai for road riding, but if it ever gets accident-tested then that's likely to be a more stringent test than anything a car accident could throw at it.
