Harness arrangement

Post by Gerry H »

A pointer passed on by a couple of scrutineers about rear harness fixings.

If the two rear shoulder straps are floor mounted, have them cross over so that the left shoulder goes to the r/h fixing and the right shoulder strap goes to the left fixing. This way helps with lateral support. With straight, left/left right/right arrangement you can, more easily, move side to side.

Don't know how you'd do this with bar mounted straps as they're not usually fixed.

Hope that makes sense :)

Yeah a good tip.

The bar mounted straps are tricky to locate without someones help. I will be getting some large washers cut about and welded on to mine to act as guides for the straps.

I got that idea from someone at Lotus, I'd never think of something that clever :D

Duncan's cage has a couple of threaded bosses welded to the horixntal bar for eye bolts. Good idea I thought.

How does that sit in terms of MSA compliance?

MSA Scrutineer checked it at knockhill. I asked him specifically about the cage and compliance. As soon as he knew that Sonny had built it he was happy beyond belief. Sounds corny but he just went into one about how good he was. I felt satisfied :D

scutineer also told me to cross over my harness from floor fixing, i also asked him wether it is best to use a harness bar on a cage , he basically said that they are not good and explained that he saw a rally car that had a side impact that shifted the cage over slightly and this caused the driver not being able to get out and im sure he said could not breathe very well as the harness was pulled so tight and would not have happened if fixed to the chassis floor
maybe something to think about

totally disagree about the Scruts comments on mounting the harness to the cage..........must have simply been a sh&t cage / car prep

seen far more cars where the floor has moved due to impact damage, if the cage is right it will not move!!

generally the speaking thats an old recomendation about the "X"........

specifically when using HANS devices or when the harness bar is directly behind the seat then there is no need (and with a HANS device strictly danderous)
